{As told by Eric's Dad}

Good morning. A late start here, the son was messing around moving sheep. He always did like being outdoors fishing and shooting, although him now spending every spare minute farming is something of a surprise to me. I did a bit of fishing once, near Tripoli ...

Gone Fishing
"After another battle at a place called El Agheilar we made rapid advances towards Tripoli. On Christmas Day we went through a town called Syrt a place I got to know very well after our division was pulled out of the fighting. The tanks needed servicing and we needed re-enforcements and a badly needed rest. We had covered almost a thousand miles from the beginning of the breakthrough at Alemain in November to the end of January, it was quite an achievement.

Tripoli was a lovely town, although it was winter it was quite warm. We swam in the sea and had a good time catching fish. Some South African troops showed us how to catch fish with explosives. A small coral reef went out to sea for a hundred yards or so and from there you threw 1/4lbs of gun cotton explosive with an underwater detonator attached into the sea. The explosion stunned the fish and then we dived in and put the floating fish into sand bags. Of course we got permission first from our major on condition we caught enough to provide meals for the troops, but we only caught enough for the twelve of us."

From Tripoli I was sent on a mine course in Syrt. As you entered the town a big placard had been put up saying "Achtung Minen" Syrty is dirty, meaning that the place was full of mines and booby traps. The devises used by the enemy as booby traps were amazing. Even an ordinary bar of soap could kill, as the inside there was an explosive and a detonator which when wet set of a chemical reaction, caused a spark and off it exploded. Turn the ignition on a car or lorry and bang up it went. There were typewriters which exploded when a certain key was pressed, doors and cupboards which set off an explosion when they were opened. Then there were the anti-personnel mines. They had three wire prongs just protruding above the ground which when stepped on would send an inner canister shooting up into the air about four foot, then explodes sending out a shower of ball bearings. In one class the instructor was demonstrating and he lifted the inner canister and bang it exploded, killing himself and wounding a lot of soldiers. He had picked up a live mine and not the demonstration ones. Some of the mines could be jumped on, (a practise not to be done though) such as German teller mines. They were designed to explode when the weight of a tank or lorry ran over them. Inside was a pressure pad which did not go off with just a man's weight."

grey morning, 55 going up to 71, cloudy until rain comes in tonight.
Need to make a run downtown to pick up a pair of Kohler points I had forgotten to get.
Not like most of us need to buy points any more...
My friend who is coming down tonight for a visit is my point installer, my Top Dead Center specialist. I told him to bring his feeler gauges and points were on his list.

{As told by Eric's Dad}

The Mareth line
"Once our division was fully equipped we engaged the enemy again and progressed very slowly into Tunisia. Again we had a breakthrough after a large battle at Medina. We reached the Mareth line and came to a standstill. It was a huge fortified fortress built by the French before the war, a replica of the Maginot line in France. The Germans and Italians were getting more and more pressure on them than ever. As well as our 8th Army, the 1st Army, consisting of British and American troops had landed in Morocco and Algeria, so cutting off any retreat to other parts of North Africa.

The army generals decided to send two divisions on what became known as the famous left hook to outflank the Mareth Line. The 1st Armoured Division, which was ours, along with a New Zealand division of infantry and artillery gunners were picked to do the outflanking. We went south of the Matmata Hills, it was a **** of a long way round and all travelling took place at night. We took whatever cover there was during daylight. We finally reached the enemy at a place called El Hamma, and quite a battle took place. My officer was killed here, he was the son of the Parkinson's butterscotch firm, quite a good officer and missed very much. Thanks to terrific bombardments we broke through and as the enemy had to take troops away from the Mareth Line, pressure was released there and our troops broke through, so the enemy was on the run once again."

47 and foggy going to 73 and then heavy rain tonight/tomorrow.

Started up the laptop this morning and had a big surprise from Microsoft...Windows 10 loaded last night...I'm sure I blocked every attempt they made to schedule it. Took over 30 minutes before I could use it as its settings took place. Couldn't figure out how to get back to Explorer as my browser, since Microsoft Edge is the new one and Norton Security says it doesn't allow it to provide real time protection. You guys have any experience?

Decided I'd try making bar-b-q when this big 10 pound pork shoulder called out to me at Costco last week. So, got the gas grill going around sunrise yesterday morning with some wet apple wood chips in my smoker box. Cut the shoulder in half, and tried two different mixes of herbs and spices. Finished the slow cooking about 7pm last night, and pulled some very tender tasty pork. Added a little vinegar, cole slaw, and corn on the cob. Now what are we going to do with over 9 lbs left over? Definitely giving some away and freezing a bunch. Can't eat it too often. Got the whole yard mowed while it cooked.

Good morning all. 43 here this morning going to 70. Partly cloudy and no rain. That is great because this evening WE are going to the Dr. My wife and I will take our family member and it takes both of us. No rain will be a big help. Moving is so much work, will be glad when it is done. How did I collect all of this stuff. Step son stopped in last evening and said he will bring a 24' box car trailer and 3 guys to help move. That is a huge blessing and a load off of my mind.

Eric Thanks for letting your dad have some of your time to talk to us about the war and his part of it.

RNG When I grew up we ate more deer than beef and we raised beef cattle for a living, so deer did not hang around close to us even when the season was out and they were safe. Ed

This seems like such a sensible solution to the deer problem in many areas. Why don't we just eat them?
Venison is delicious, easy to disguise if needed. Venison chili. Yum. Did you have a favorite Ed?

I believe many countries have outlawed the use of land mines. Indiscriminate maiming/killing weapons. Doesn't know friend
or foe. Combatants or non combatants. Adult or child...
And I think the US would not agree to the ban.
After we laid all those mines in Vietnam, which are still killing people, I thought we learned.
This is not meant as political, just the human condition.
I'm sure many of the things mentioned in Eric's Dad's war chronicles have made us think.

Perhaps land mines are yesterday's IED's.
We humans sure do spend a lot of time trying to blow ourselves up.
What other species can say that?

Someday man will become more civilized and peaceful.
All the sci fi literature says that happens offworld after we have made this Earth
almost unlivable due to widespread nuclear war. Usually no crops, everyone starves. survivors
go off to peaceful kingdom elsewhere. Until the bad aliens show up, but that's another story.
And yes, the civilization with the strongest military, and strongest defense, survives.
I've been reading sci fi for almost sixty years. Lot of the stuff I read as a kid has come true.

Depressing to think we likely aren't smart enough as a species to prevent wrecking our planet.
We've cleaned up nicely since we came out of the cave with our clubs, but old habits die hard.
Hopeful that we can keep the ship afloat under our watch and for long into the future.

Bet you would sure need a cab tractor on Mars...;)

I skimmed thru the last several days of posts, way behind.
Erics Dad, Thank for the stories. My dad camped in england, visited omaha beach, took a tour of france, luxumberg, belgium, and got to shoot a bunch of ammo, all curtesy of his uncle sam. He doesnt talk about it in detail, but did say it was ****, and you either killed or got killed.
Don, glad the foot is on the mend. And the backhoe.
Driving in the rain today.....

Good Morning. 0720, thunderstorm, 67F with 99% humidity. Forecast high of 80F with 100% chance of rain today, and a low of 69F tonight. After 2-3 days of the showers skipping over us, we woke to a good soaking rain this morning. We also woke to no lights. Margie got ready for work by flashlight. We do have power now though.

I had planned on transplanting oak trees down at the graveyard this morning. If the rain will ease up just a hair, I will still do that. Also want to hand water with some 11-2-1 liquid plant food in the garden. I have been doing it after I run the sprinklers twice a week. Everything is greening up nicely. Then in to work this afternoon.

Eric, thanks for the stories.

You guys have a good one,

Larro

Good Morning,
Got to pick up the kids for the day and wouldn't you know it,,,it is cloudy and cool. :-(

Will try to hit the post office to.

As for windows 10. It blew up my laptop last week and took every file I had with it!!!!!!!!!!!! The laptop is a older HP and after a new hard drive and three days on the phone with some girl working for Microsoft in India it is working again on windows 8.1. She told me they are having all kinds of issues with 10 and it should of never loaded on my Lap top because it is not compatible and I should not use 10. How do they get away with loading something on your property with out your consent?? There aut to be a law.
So in the mean time I went out and bought a new PC desktop that already has 10 in it. and I will only use the lap top as needed. And I am $800.00 lighter. I like 10 way better than 8 and 8.1 is better than 8 but I was happy with XP.

Good morning! 62 cloudy. With the 2 1/4" of rain yesterday we are soaked for a while again. My spillways need erosion repair. This is the first time they have eroded in the last 15 years.

The brown recluse spider bite area is still sore and very tender and I am reminded of this every time I take a step and my pants rub across the bite site. It's best to walk with my hand in my pocket holding the pants away from my leg. The bite area is still purple, and hard however the all over red body rash has diminished about 90%. This is day 11 after the bite. I still wonder how the site area will heal, the skin is still intact.

The tractor is grounded, too many areas to sink in this "once over" beach sand.

May wildflowers are starting to bloom.

Beautiful today, 2-3" of rain tomorrow, while we travel a 400 mile round trip to Front Royal for our son's 40th birthday party (birthday is May 31).

Drew, I'm also a big science fiction fan, started reading it as a 7-8 year old. Enjoyed Asimov particularly.
Man is indeed the only species with the ability to wipe out his species, and the only one with the capacity to save it.

67.9F with high, thin cloud deck @ 10:15 ... high today of around 74F. Calling for rain tomorrow.

Spent most of yesterday again cutting firewood ... then spent some time working on clearing the garden area. Got several more trees knocked over and the root balls dug out, including an apple tree which was a bugger. I think there are only one or two still standing that have to come out.

Most of the firewood is done at this point, except for what I knocked down yesterday ... at least as far as cutting goes. Still have to split and stack it.

Nephew is due back tomorrow afternoon and needs his chainsaw back to take down a couple of trees, so glad I got all the bucking out of the way.

Lawn is in bad need of mowing, so I'll probably throw the MMM on there and get that done as the first order of business for the day. After that, mebbe back to clearing/clean up while the area is still relatively dry.

Found out last night my former "house guest" now has a second case pending in Florida:

Hernando County Detention Center Inmate Search Details

He was charged under Florida Statute 941.02 which states:

941.02 Fugitives from justice; duty of Governor.祐ubject to the provisions of this chapter, the provisions of the Constitution of the United States controlling, and any and all Acts of Congress enacted in pursuance thereof, it is the duty of the Governor of this state to have arrested and delivered up to the executive authority of any other state of the United States any person charged in that state with treason, felony, or other crime, who has fled from justice and is found in this state.

No bond amount set, which I assume means that even if he somehow managed to come up with the $1500.00 for bond for the other pending charge, he still ain't gonna get released ... but who knows.

Today is Day 34 of his incarceration.
