Bingo. So not sure though how to reference something; what's fastest, searching the post number in search? If RNG and I are 100 pages, at least...off, that's a lot of hunting around trying to guess at the right page to nail the post number. Suggestions?

Provide a url (link) to the post (not just the thread) ... that way when anyone clicks it, it should take them to the appropriate page in the thread that the post appears on.

Good afternoon,

Well 67 and sun dried it up enough that I could mow around the house and the east side of the shed. Maybe by Saturday I will be able to get into the south east corner ??

Washed the truck and filled it up, got beer and am just kicking back with a beer.

Dr apt tomorrow AM.

I called about the package the USPS lost and got a person about as helpful as teats on a bore hog. :mur: :irked:

At the top of the post you want to reference, in the dark blue bar at the right end, you'll find a number. It's a hyperlink. If you right click on it you should get something like "Copy Link Address". Do that, then past it into the message or email you're composing.

HTH!

Good afternoon,
I called about the package the USPS lost and got a person about as helpful as teats on a bore hog. :mur: :irked:

That saying is very common but not very true. When we raised hogs the location and number of pairs of teats was one of the criteria the bore had to pass. We'd just flip him over if the teats were paired up and he had a minimum of I believe 10 pair (Dad got out of the hog business before I got big enough to help much. He did all that.) he'd be considered. The more the better. If teats were staggered he was bacon.

43.5F and clear @ 03:20 ... weather today is supposed to be clear/sunny with a high of 67F or so.

Should be a good day for drying. Tomorrow should be even better.

Spent most of yesterday bucking logs, including a few of the big ones (36" diameter) that Zack delivered in the last couple of loads he dropped off.

Still have some more to do before I pull the grapple and drop the box blade and put on the MMM so I can get the front mowed. Need to sharpen saw chains.

Good morning all. 50 degrees this morning and looking like a great day to come, with only a few drops of rain to dodge.

... about as helpful as teats on a bore hog.

Our equivalent would be to say "about as much use as a chocolate teapot". I once got blown up while making a cup tea - tell you about that later.

Water
"Water was quite a problem, little to drink and certainly none to wash in. There was plenty of hard tack to eat as well as cans of bully beef. Petrol was always plentiful, which was essential to keep on the move. There were some waterholes in the desert, a few deep wells and they were marked on the maps but the water in them was undrinkable. During the first retreat down the desert, British troops threw loads of rock salt down the wells and when the enemy pushed back they did the same. Sometimes we used the water from the radiators of knocked out enemy lorries to wash in and sometimes these lorries carried German supplies of sausage or bacon and tinned Italian tomatoes. This meant we could ditch the bully beef and soften the hard tack in the juice. As I have said before petrol was in abundance, so it was easy to make a fire. All you had to do was place an empty petrol can on the sand, it had no bottom and holes round the sides, pour petrol on the sand and you had a good fire straight away.
Some days the wind got up quite strong, they were called Camsene winds, they were searingly hot and made you sweat a lot, then sand would stick to you, most unpleasant. If only the petrol would turn to water. There is an old saying ""when the sands of the desert grow cold"" and it's quite true at night it did turn cold. If they had plastic sheets then as now we could have dug a trench and put in the plastic sheeting to collect condensation as I have seen them do on the telly. Matches were in short supply too but cigarettes were plentiful, they used to bring them with the petrol. Maybe the authorities thought cigs calmed our nerves. I used an old magnifying glass to light my cigs during the day."

Desert Rain
"By the beginning of November we were beyond Alamein and in Sidi Barrani. 20,000 enemy troops had been taken prisoner and hundreds of tanks and guns captured and the coast road was packed solid with prisoners being marched to compounds in the rear. On 11th November, Halfaya Pass was captured and with it thousands of Italian troops. The Germans had just abandoned them and used their trucks to get away themselves. A few days after, Tobruk was taken and with its capture hundreds of our troops were released from German prisoner of war camps. We were still advancing very fast, sometimes over 50 miles a day. A great help to the offensive was the capture of a large airfield near a place I think was called Maturba. Benghazi was the next large town to be taken, just before December. I remember December 1942 very well because it rained and rained until in places the desert was like a lake. All this time we wanted water, but when it came it was too much and made the going very tough. The Western Desert, where all the fighting took place was not dry sand dunes like you see on the telly. It was mainly sandstone with a covering of sand maybe 6 to 9 inches deep. A few places had deeper sand, blown there by the wind and it was there that the sand tracks on the lorries came into use."

54 going to 67. Today and tomorrow we may get our first 2 days straight without rain since April 24. Then another big rain starts Friday night.

Eric, thanks for continuing to share history, and including a map of the period. It always amazes me the number of newspaper, magazine and internet articles written about places, or events that don't include a map. I've always thought it an important element of many stories. Google and Bing maps have made researching much easier, and I use them to supplement my reading.

Middle son came to visit last night and is leaving his boxer for us to dog sit for a few days...going to a wedding in Buffalo. Always nice to have a playmate for our dog.
