Good morning. The relatively clear skies we have enjoyed for the last few days have ended and there is now a distinct chill in the air from the easterly breeze.

At least we made the most of it yesterday. Instead of eating inside I persuaded my wife to put together a picnic lunch. Not that we travelled a long way before dining, only to a field at the side of the big pond that has been closed off for a while and so relatively free of sheep poo, which is never the best accompaniment to outdoor eating. We took our time and watched the birds searching for their own meal, the first of the swallows arriving from Africa and doing their usual aerial acrobatics over the water, while a solitary lapwing slowly walked the bankside, all the time prodding the soft grass for something juicy. On the far bank we could see a pair of mallards surveying the area for a possible nest site, although each time they paused in the rushes, an inquisitive lamb would bound over and move them on again. As we drained the last of the hot water from the flask and made a final cup of tea before packing the empty food containers, the dog, who had all the time been sniffing and wagging his tail at this excess of outdoor air and tasty morsels, jumped on us with an expression that looked to say "that was great - when can we do it again ?".

A great time out, the only thing that was missing was a slice or two of Don's pie. :licking:

Glad you had a good time. I stayed at Beaufort Town Docks on the way South to Florida. Walked the dock area, shops, restaurants, very nice, very old.
Reminded me of the older parts of Baltimore's Inner Harbor. On the way back North was chased by an awful offshore thunderstorm with
constant lightning right behind the boat, going flat out to make the inlet there, past Morehead City. Once I got up to the little cut before the Neuse River,
calm returned. For about an hour until out of the cut we went. And then the Neuse was choppy as could be and was throwing our 25 ton boat around like a cork.
That river has some serious issues with wind opposing current from multiple directions. After calming down from the lightning, now we were getting tossed around in an area we thought would be a nice calm river to cruise on. Wrong. By the time we got to Belhaven, getting beat up the length of the Neuse River, I was ready to stay at that dock for a few days. And we did. Important to keep the Commodore happy. She was ready to get off the boat and rent a car driving home. North Carolina had not been easy on us. And the Currituck Sound was shallow too, though so very beautiful.

My neighbor has boated down in the Beaufort area and has taken pictures of the horses from his boat. Really neat they are still running free.

if I may digress...
When we made our Intracoastal trips to Florida we were on the water 30 days going South. Got a chance to see a lot of ports. Always found a nice marina, no anchoring out except for lunch and usually ate that in a no wake zone that were common in many areas. Funny I remember eating my lunch idling past Savannah, all those private docks causing the radio to crackle at times with demands to slow down and naming the boat name. Clearly someone had good binoculars. I only got yelled at once, by some bozo bad driver who called me a "menace to the waterways" on the vhf; I thought that was rather charming. He wouldn't move over so i just slid on past one or two knots overtaking speed, as utterly slow as possible, and poor baby he rocked a little. Because he was stubborn and had a 7 knot trawler while I had a 16 knot planing boat. I always wanted a little plaque with that quote on it. Me who slowed down for anyone, never rocked sailboats, and had taken piloting courses and understood right of way. Now let's see, if you drove your car down the middle of a two lane road right in the middle, and someone tried to get around you, would you call them a menace? I can only imagine how Captain Slowpoke Hogging Channel drives his car. Probably an exact speed limit guy. Sigh.

ok, that's TMI
but I did keep a daily log and I have it in print. My wife made me do it every night on the laptop. Creatively named Trip South and Trip North. Could have been Down and Back. Three years apart. A great adventure and despite a few bent props in shallow areas of the Intracoastal, including one nasty rock ledge, ooohhh, that baby felt really solid as we thudded over it, trying to get out of the way of a pushed barge coming at us in a narrow channel. Might has right and I was tiny compared to that barge. Well, let me get just a little bit further over, to be safer. The rear of the boat came up several inches when we crunched over that, bronze props bending into pretzels. Thankfully I carried spares. And the trick was getting the spare props fixed and shipped to a port ahead of us, meeting up with us, getting them back on board, before we bent them again. Always in the channel, always because something was under there that wasn't on the chart. Like a big sandy ridge caused by a nearby ocean inlet. That's when you forget the charts and start looking carefully for the small temporary buoys and markers put up, marking shoaled areas.

now that's way tmi...I could tell sea stories for a while...

I bet you do have some stories from such a nice long trip. I know what you mean about the currents and wind around the Beaufort area. We used to cross Core Sound from Harkers Island to Cape Lookout every summer for vacation. Between the shoals, narrow channels and sand bars, a big wind and tide could make for tough going.

The wedding we attended was supposed to be on Cape Lookout, traveling over on a 80 foot boat, but one of the diesels died so they married on the boat docked across from Shackleford Banks. It was still special with the wild horses in the background.

More more absolutely fascinating love ICW stories

Hunted around and found my trip diaries, emailed them to you. If you start before you go to work, you won't get anything done.
Porpoises swimming alongside the boat. Blue crabs caught off the marina pier. Manatees coming up to the boat and saying hello.
Horses running along the beach.
and oh so many bent props.

Good morning all. 60 here this morning going to 72. 80% chance of showers today, less than 1/4 in. I am told the fire is up over 7000 ac and still growing.

Drinking first cup of coffee. 41° with clear skies this morning. Heading to 76° (Salina, KS) with plenty of sun. Another travel day. Stoppped Cabela's main offices last night to take advantage of a free night of camping for stopping. Always find something I need at one of their stores. Lots of Cabela tractors on display.
Good Morning All.

Good morning! 66˚ looking at the radar it looks like two waves will be passing over in a few hours. 9" in the last 5 days.

The dewberry hunt was disappointing after a showy blossom March. Most of the blooms are little brown nubs now. All I could find was a cup of berries in 40 acres. If I can find another cup in the back forty I'll have enough for a small pie.

Eric: "Long live the queen" She's got another good 15 years at least.

Don, I looked for some dewberries, and about 90% was just little brown nubs? I was guessing rabbits or coons ate them? Or is that just nature's way of a bad crop?

63 this morning and headed to 69 today. Rain started a couple of hours ago and should last most of the day.

I'll spend the day in the chicken coops.

Kyle. I take it this is the sedge you are referring to. Plants Profile for Cyperus esculentus (yellow nutsedge)

SedgeHammer, Sedgehammer Herbicide | Do My Own Pest Control

Basagran T/O Herbicide

Might try one of those products for control. I've used the Basagran before. Although I don't remember where and why. But it was something we would pull out for tougher weeds that glyphosate struggled with, and yellow nutsedge is one of them.

Thanks but I'm pretty sure you can't put the sedgehammer chemical in a vegetable garden.

I plant some buckwheat every year, and agree with its fast growth and ability to discourage weeds.
Might have to try that.

Eric, glad you had a nice English country side picnic.

Don, nice pie!

Good morning! 59˚ heading to 80˚ 100% sunshine. A good day to dry out.

I was surprised to see one of my small ponds only half full. The spillway had eroded.

Ed, sending you the rain we have used it enough.

Kyle, 95% of the dew berries are the little brown nubs - like the blossoms never developed. Out of 80 acres all we found was 4 cups of berries.

Eric, nice lunch atmosphere.

I checked the tracking number on my special British threaded plug for the pressure washer, the delivery date is May 19th . It is still trying to leave China. The $7 plug had free shipping, I guess that means the slow boat from China.

Good morning,
Rain yesterday and cloudy and colder today 80 by Sunday.Rain washed some of the fines into and off of the new gravel. Those fines make a mess.

Wife is burning another day off.
Sounded like a nice lunch Eric.

Good Morning! 53F @ 6:45AM. Thunderstorms. High 57F. Winds SSE at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 90%.

Drew, smoke from large fires can drift hundreds of miles and ruin the air. We've certainly had our share of that out here.

Rain we have, but mostly wind. The splashing sounds on the patio tell me that the gutters are full and the drain lines are again clogged by grass. The new drive shaft for the flail mower came yesterday, but I'll need to let things dry out a few days before I know if it's the right length.

TGIF gang!

61.1F and overcast @ 10:00 ... forecast high is 66F ... looks like most of the rain is by us, although there is still a possibility of a shower later. Extended forecast is supposed to be nice tho' ... high's in the 60's and 70's and mostly sunny.

Starting to see a good number of trees in bloom.

Took U. B. down to the steel place yesterday and we picked up 5' x 10' piece of expanded metal. He was wanting to replace the wood floor on his little trailer and I had mentioned adding some expanded metal to the lower frame of the grapple for protection. He cut out what he needed and I got the drops ... which is more than enough to cover the lower frame. So getting that welded on is what's on the menu today, along with fixing a couple of minor hydraulic leaks and maybe getting the Weather Pack connector installed on the wiring harness for the diverter valve.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable, safe, and productive day.

&0's and rain later today.
I've spent many days cruising the Currituck, Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds as well as the Pasquatank, North and Alligator Rivers. When we were young, we would ski from Elizabeth City by the Coast Guard Base, around the horn to Point Harbor. If you got too tired to make the whole run you would "hit a swell", and fall, never admit you were tired! We use to fish out of Oregon Inlet a lot, out one dead calm day in a 50' single screw Hatteras style high bow, when a rogue wave struck the starboard stern and rocked the boat so hard we thought it was going over, I had the great fortune of being in the crow's nest. I locked my feet under a rail and hung on for dear life, never rode a carnival ride that was that violent. We were out in the Gulf Stream one day and saw what we thought was a tarp floating, we went to get it so it wouldn't foul anyone's props, when we got there it was a Manta Ray. It was so big it looked as if you could step off the boat and walk across it. It was just sunning and finally glided away. Drew is correct, the Currituck is very shallow, I flipped a 9' hydroplane out there in 1969, so far from sure you could barely make out people, I'm sailing through the air thinking no way I can swim that far! The water was about chest deep.

rain has started to pound down, naturally after I just finished watering the vegetables. something is chomping on my bush beans; number of other plants also chomped. Need to find something organic that actually works on bugs. I think there's an Organic Bob's Deadbug being sold, but so hard not to kill the good bugs, without which of course we would likely starve.

The new beginnings of a Santa Rosa Plum.
