You nailed me to a "T"

Just checked the weather before locking up and heading home. 35.9F already, and daylight still almost 6 hours away. The weather station is here in Blountstown, and it's usually a degree or two colder at the Larro Ranchero. Looks like a frosty morn ahead.

But you've got to be able to break out every now-n-again just to satisfy the craving for what you're missing. Just not often and only a taste.

Good morning. Had a quick wander outside with the dog and decided to leave feeding the sheep until our grandson arrives. This year he has really taken to clambering over the big "square" bales in the hay barn and filling racks has become the highlight of his visits.

I was faced with two options for my spare time yesterday, either go and play with the new brush cutter, or finish the bed for my wife's herbs. I chose to stay married.

The bed is 4' x 8', with retaining walls made out of old terracotta posts. At the moment there is only one lonely thyme plant in there - had to leave plenty of space in case RNG is sending some more .

Herb Patch.jpg terracota post.jpg nut.jpg

The posts were salvaged a few years ago from the stalls of a neighbour's old cow byre that was being demolished. In their time they must have been state of art, really well constructed, with a 1" steel reinforcing rod running down the centre. Despite being a hundred years old the steel extending from the ends had only surface rust and looked like new when I cut each one off.

12 degrees right now....high of 37 today.
Most of the "pond" on the front lawn was gone by the time I got home yesterday...the field is still a skating rink. No need to go down there for a while, so no problems.
I bought a universal remote for the cable box, TV and Blu-Ray, I'm going to program that today. I also have a sound bar that I hope I can program in to the universal remote. It's a good sound, but the remote that came with the sound bar leaves much to be desired.
Once that's done, I'll probably catch up on the X-Files and other stuff I recorded.

30 degrees this morning high of 48 later and finally wind has died down. Woke up with monitor pulling on my side my punishment for misbehaving. Not sure what today brings will have to wait and see.

TR-6 in shop to fix transmission leak and tweak Stromberg carbs then hit the market for sale. Just something I've lost interest in. Worked out a deal to trade time on mini-ex for gun safe now guns will have a good place to stay. My other two safes are full

a much cooler 28 going up to low 50s today.
Going to be outside most of the day; plumbers show up with ditchwitch
and are laying a new underground water supply line to the barn and capping off the current line which has now broken
for the fifth time. I really need the water turned on down there, my equipment is covered in winter mud.

put in order for one dumptruck of sand and two of crusher run next week, which hopefully will be all I need and enough to make my
"around the orchard" path navigable year round instead of having treacherous mudholes as it does now.

Eric, I don't think I've ever seen terracota posts like that, pretty neat.

20 going to 49 and sunny again.

Although well below freezing, my hike around this morning convinced me the ground isn't frozen deep enough for the tractor to go through the bottom without leaving ruts, so, I'll start on the many other chores that don't need the tractor. Not complaining, but it has rained and snowed so much this year that the ground is super saturated in places.

Buppies, sorry to hear about your health challenges.

Eric, I'm with Drew, never heard of those type posts and impressed they've held up so well. Glad you're staying married...now get out there with that new Stihl!

Poured first cup of coffee. 58° with clear skies this morning. Heading to 85° with mostly sunny skies. Going to spend most of the day on patio today. Recovering from 3 miles of roaming all the booths.
Good Morning All.

Morning all!

Been too long since I was here last. I hope and Pray all is well with all-o-Y'all...

A week ago the loggers suddenly showed up with the bulldozer to rebuild one of my fire roads they trashed and I relocated to across from the gate along a ridge line, across the big bowl to the far side.

Yesterday the 300hp mulcher (A Franklin with 10.5' mulching head, last seen in my posts in fall of '11) was supposed to come and mulch the connector perimeter trail across the former burned area and down the long side of the property to the power line clear cut at the farthest corner, and to cut in my 100m shooting range by the house. But the soaking wet weather prevented all of that fun.

Rescheduling is a beast because I'm at a trade show all week next week, and the land clearing company has a huge contract pending, and I cannot sign the replanting contract and schedule the trees to be planted without fire access...

Last Saturday I ha a good long day of seat time moving hardwood treetops and logger leftovers into areas that would NOT be replanted with saplings so I could process them for fire wood. I also messed around with some broken logger mats (12'x12' mats of treated 2"x12" boards) and some long dry timber slash to make a barely passable ford for the wet spot in the bottom of the draw/bowl (I may have more than one spring on this property) because if it is not frozen or dry I believe the tractor will get big time stuck. I suspect a load of rip rap and gravel is in my future to make this crossing work.

I've burned almost everything I've cut so far, today I may cut a little bit more. I have still got a bunch of beech and oak treetops to pull out of the clear cut to use for fire wood, and honestly there are a few beauties I cannot figure out how to get to without a logging winch and some long, long cable... Too hard to cross the field of stumps, many of which are hard to see from the seat of the tractor...

Needless to say, 3 months in the marriage is doing great, my teens hate me but my 7 year old loves me still. The dog is a good dog, even when he's not good. The HUGE project looming right now is it looks like we will move forward this spring with having the existing modular lifted off the basement & concrete wrap around porch, and have a new spiffy 2 story modular put on in it place (along with converting carport to garage & finishing a bathroom & utility room in the basement. That will be a wild 2-4 months.

So I been gone a couple weeks, but I posted a good long post. Like I said I hope and pray all of you are doing very well.

Be well all,
David

I just sent Don a text message, he's fine. I will let him explain his absence. :)

David, I'm guessing your ex plays a large part of your teenagers' ill will. I pray that when they get out on their own, they'll let you back into their lives.

Buppies, that diabetes is one crappy disease. My blood tests show my number getting ever closer to 100. It runs in my family, but mostly can be handled with diet.

I need to go get some 2x4's to mount the barn owl nesting hutch I built into one of the post oaks. Hope it's not too late this season for them to find a home.

Need to spray 2-4-D in the yard to try and kill some spring weeds.

Temp at 37 going to low 70's.

Eric, those terracotta posts are perfect for what you are using them for. I always worry when folks use treated wood for that.

RNG, your food should be the tastiest with all those nice herbs.

I hope to get a few things planted in the garden today, but it is still muddy.

Good Morning! 51 F @ 6:00 AM. Partly to mostly cloudy. High near 65F. Winds WNW at 5 to 10 mph.

Only a few drops fell when yesterday's front passed through, leaving no measurable amount in the gauge. And Sunday's storm appears to have Petered out before it even gets here. The reservoir has just eclipsed last year's level, and much earlier, so there is hope we'll pick up a little more. That level is nothing to write home about, though, as it's only a bit over half of full capacity. Looking very much like a March Miracle is the only way we're going to avert another summer of strict water rationing.

Eric I can't imagine a better material for your raised beds than those terracotta posts. I also can't imagine what something like that would cost to make these days. But in 1000 years when archaeologists dig up your farmstead they'll no doubt find those posts in much the same condition as they are now.

One last question on the flail if you have the patience for it, David. Are you comfortable mowing around the house and the attendant windows? Do the hammers swing toward or away from the tractor at the bottom of their arc? Oops, that's two questions...

Finished trimming the back yard landscaping yesterday, filling the dump bed on the RTV twice with sage and rosemary. Gosh that stuff makes my nose run! Took several feet off the height of the sage, but only trimmed back the edges of the rosemary to keep it a safe distance away from the house. Also pulled what was left out of the ground from several plants that the gophers had gotten to. And also noticed that the deer are back to munching on the manzanita. Perhaps it's time to just let the animals have their way with the landscaping, and replace what gets eaten with plants that have shown themselves to not be on the menu?

36 this morning and headed to 59 today. Nice sunny day.

Got my feed yesterday but spent too much time moving gravel so not unloaded. I just packed a bag to the barn to feed. I think the road will hold me today. It's still soft after the rock. This is making that bulk feed bin more attractive. Priced it yesterday and feed cost drop 25% and they bring it to me no charge. Now to find a bin. Only need a 5 ton.

Then off to get me and boy a hair cut. Then back to clean out a freezer. Evidently the air compressor kicked the breaker in the garage. The freezer is on same breaker. A rewire will be coming also. But the freezer will be moving to the new building and will have its own breaker. My nose figured out what was going on as I hadn't been using air compressor. Lost about half the corn and a few other things nothing big.

35 heading to mid 50s with lots of sun.
Daughter and two of the grand-kidos are coming to spend the night this afternoon. So Gator rides, tractor driving and running the trains will be the things to do. The 2YO thinks the tractor is his. I will have to take off the plow and let him run the grapple. :licking:

Good morning all. 38F this morning , clear, going to 72F moderate breeze today. Wind will be kicking up with the 70 temps the next few days. Have several putter jobs to do over at stepdaughters for TMA

29.3F and overcast @ 08:00 ... high today is predicted to be 42F, then 55F tomorrow ... that repeats for Mon. and Tues., then back down into the mid 30's for highs.

I sure ain't complaining ... but we are at 1/2 the normal precip for the year. Something to keep an eye on.

Found a couple more outside fixtures on the backside of the house that the bulbs need replaced in, so that will be on today's menu. Probably also head over to the polebarn and grab that 1000' roll of Cat5 and start stringin' some wire.

Hope everyone has a enjoyable, productive, and safe weekend.

Kyle, winner winner, chicken dinner... More than that I cannot say in Public, but it is not pretty what that person is doing...

Be well,
David
