50 right now...high of 77 today.

TXDon, what were the circumstances of Mike's death?

   / Good morning!!!! #35,982
Quite thankful for the breeze that is keeping the heat of the sun in check this morning.

Had a red letter day yesterday. Actually it was only a recall letter from Honda, telling me the anti-collision system needs a firmware update. They say there are some circumstances where it applies brakes when there is nothing in front. For 15 minutes of my time I get a fix and a cup of coffee - sounds ok to me, especially if it saves someone running into my rear.

TxDon, thinking of low priority projects, did you manage to fill an empty peg on the other side of the bridge this year ?

nice morning here, 72 degrees in fair weather only going up to 84 today.
starting off my day by going to the foot doctor for whatever magic insert he has made; the New Balance
walking shoes he recommended I get work, but still feel like giant sneakers. Hoping he has an insert I can wear
in a pair of loafers.

Got my farmer neighbor to sign an agreement to sell me the acre of buffer land; he came over looking for "earnest" money. He wanted a thousand down; without a survey finished and a plot description, I thought a 500 deposit was more reasonable. No argument with him; I think part of that deposit will go to the ABC store this morning but that's his problem.
Making progress slowly with him. Interesting that he came over quite sober at dinner time; that tells me he's out of money and out of booze. Well, won't be the first time an agreement has been motivated by booze or in his case the lack thereof.

When my grandfather died in the late 50's, the estate appraiser came, who just happened to be one of the few realtors in our small town, and the man who sold our family farm to my grandfather in 1939. And who owned the insurance agency I was later to own, and insured my family. So everyone knew everyone very, very well....

So, out comes the full bottle of Scotch and by the time the bottle was empty, my father and the appraiser had come up with a nice number everyone was happy with. How that guy drove home I don't know. Of course back then the local cops would have just followed you home to make sure you were ok. My how times have changed...and for the better.

Going to dismantle my little vegetable garden later today and just write it off as a disaster. Flooded twice, the tomatoes were awful, the peppers shrunken, the potatoes came out small and leathery, and the strawberries, well, they seem quite happy producing little berries that someone or something always gets before I do. Next year the whole thing will get enlarged and built on a raised bed. Assuming the deal goes through on the acre of farm land next to me, then I'll be soliciting advice on what to plant there.

45F now mid 70's for high...now that's what I call summer. :)

70 this morning high of 84 later. Heat and humidity come back for the weekend

   / Good morning!!!! #35,986
Coffee has been poured. 47° with mostly clear skies this morning. Heading to 77° with lots of sun then clouds. Got my Aunt to hospital and back home yesterday. All went well. Lawn cutting today.
Drew, my wife first Kindle was the white paper type. For reading it was the best. It worked when it was bright outside. She currently has a Kindle HDX. Nice unit that works well for here reading and games. Plus some internet and email. Good quality screen. It's biggest drawback is not all APP's will work on it. Her original Kindle would last weeks before it required charging. The HDX needs to be recharged daily.
RGN, Amazon delivery depends on your location. At my home delivery will take up to 3 days. But when I was in AZ for the winter. Some orders were delivered same day. Others were delivered on Sunday. It helps if you have distribution center in the your metro area.
Good Morning All.

61 and breezy - feels so good. Only going up to 81 today.

Don, thanks for sharing our TBN condolences with Bernice. Must be tough.

Good morning, 52F heading to 77F. Got the bagger on the rider last night, pretty easy, just hope it works well.

68 this morning and headed to 91 today. Heat and humidity is back this weekend.

I am afraid my mower is on its last leg. When it gets hot it starts giving fits. Died yesterday on hired hand with a puff of white smoke. He came and got me. Took 5 or 6 hits of the starter before it turned over. Then started puffing a dull red smoke. 3-4 puffs. The red smoke has me confused. Helper also seen it. So I'm not completely crazy yet. But can't find out what red smoke means. I've seen white, blue and black and know what they indicate. It's a Kawasaki engine. Joked with a friend last night that the red smoke just might be the magic smoke. As he'd never seen an engine smoke red either.

Mower is still sound so a new engine might be in its future. But I may run this one till she's completely gone. I like the Kawasaki engine. Does anyone have experience with the newer motors. Thinking of adding hp if I make an engine swap. 25 now thinking about 27 or 30 for new one. I don't mow weekly I mow when I get to it. So the extra power would be bog down prevention.

No helper rest of week. He plays high school baseball and has a tournament this weekend. So maybe my bushhoging will get done. Mowed around chicken coops with bushhog yesterday until I hung up in ditch. Pulled it out with dozer. Will go finish that today and try to get to fields today. Just heard first semis pull in. They're finally hauling sh**.

Harvey will probably put a thread in the safety forum another day.

TxDon, thinking of low priority projects, did you manage to fill an empty peg on the other side of the bridge this year ?

Ahh man! I thought everyone forgot about that. With all the rains this spring, the area I would be standing in is under water. As soon as it dries out I will be getting right on that as soon as I finish the . . . . .

Good Morning, 72˚ heading to the 90s. It looks like that brief shower on July 4th was it for rain this month and mowing is slowing down.

The Internet guy came out yesterday and my antenna had drifted north during that storm in June. He pushed it back about 10˚ and the speed tripled. I'm up to the max of 3 Mbps again. I have a set screw in that pole now.

   / Good morning!!!! #35,991
54F this morning with a nice breeze. Upper 70's and clear today and tomorrow. Should be good outdoor work days, the air has dried out nicely.

Red exhaust smoke? Something that is not oil or gas is burning?

Drew, sorry your garden didn't do well. It hasn't been a great year here either but my green beans finally set blossoms a couple days back. Sharon cut one head of cabbage yesterday to make a sort of goulash she likes. Raised beds sounds like a good strategy to try. Reducing the flooding should help reduce nutrient loss too.

   / Good morning!!!! #35,992
Farmer, sounds like transmission (If it was an old ford), I would make sure it is sound before an engine swap.

Drew, you make my garden sound great, was a little disappointed in it cause the heat killed mine early on.

Set the horses out on the back pasture, they seem happy today. Goats are jealous

73 going to 84 and more rain. June weather in July and vise versa

Congratulations! Did you get it notarized?

And what does an acre go for in your neck of the woods? The bit of land I last bought here in Mississippi was $75K for about 65 acres of "forest" land in 2012.

Did they put red diesel in the tank?

Good Morning. 0815, partly cloudy, 81F with 91% humidity. Forecast high of 89F with 60% chance of thunderstorms today, and a low of 76F tonight. We had a little rain during the night, so I didn't have to water the garden this morning. There is long bands of showers moving from west to east along the coast, but so far they are all staying a little south of the Larro Ranchero.

The BIL needs me to run by Lowe's and pick some stuff up for him this morning when I do my town run. That means I have to clean out the back of the truck. Having a bed cover is nice in some ways, but it leads to hauling a collection of stuff that would never be left in the open back of a truck.

Drew, I'm still planting for this year. If you want to look at my many failures {and few successes} look at http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/rural-living/310948-how-does-your-garden-grow-72.html. There are some good gardeners over there.

You guys have a good one,

Larro

Congratulations!

And what does an acre go for in your neck of the woods?
farmland is worth $4K per acre without road frontage. With, a little more.
I paid $6K just to keep him happy, he wanted more...If I can block the view of his tornado ruined greenhouses,
the investment will pay off many times. The value of the buffer is huge. Plus I'll have up to an acre of real farm land to plant something, what I have no idea. More buffer trees on the edge for sure.

Did they put red diesel in the tank?

It's gasoline. Seems all this started when it was run empty. I know that it was refilled with gas. As I filled the container that was used. I have two gas cans and fuel was bought night before. Although I did stop at a different station but it's a fairly busy station and I've bought from them before. First thoughts were clogged fuel lines. But they showed open when I blow back through them.

I broke the engine to deck belt yesterday messing with it. Will go today and get another one. And try it again. I have a neighbor with a lawn mower shop and may see what he says.

Kev. The engine is separated from hydro pumps by a belt. Mower has 3 belts. Engine to trans. Eng. to deck. Then deck belt.

70F @ 6:00AM. Abundant sunshine. High near 100F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph.

David, good to hear your boxer girl came through with flying colors. Hope the cone of shame, if she's wearing one, isn't too much of a bother.

Larro, thanks for sharing another slice of your paradise.

Drew, I've been reading books on handhelds for a long time. Started with a Palm V, the progressed through a series over the years to the iPhone 4S I have now. I still prefer paper books, but there's nothing handier than being able to pull a book out of your pocket when you're stuck waiting in line, and the 4S is a lot smaller than even the smallest paperback. That ensures I always have a book when the opportunity to read pops up. I haven't sprung for a tablet yet, as I haven't come up with a good use case. Already keep a laptop in the headboard, a computer in the office, and when the shop is set up there'll be another laptop out there. Why use a dinky tablet screen when a laptop is so handy? Also, not sure if the dedicated readers can handle audio books, something to consider if you drive a lot and have an iPhone interface for the car (or motorcycle!).

"He died doing what he enjoyed doing". When it comes to how you die, it doesn't get much better than that. Sure beats heck out of wasting away in a nursing home. But Mike left us way too early, and there's nothing good to say about that. Thanks, Don, for letting the family know that they are in our thoughts.

Believe me, Eric, the only reason Honda sent you a recall notice is to protect their own *****, not yours. If manufacturers were required to reimburse owners for the time and inconvenience related to bringing in a vehicle in for recall related service, you can bet the need for such campaigns would drop dramatically.

Red smoke at morning, Farmer take warning. Red smoke at night, Farmer's delight. Er, sorry Farmer, that's skies and sailors, not smoke and Farmers! Never saw an engine blow red smoke before. Google wasn't much help either. Any chance it could be loose rust getting blown out of the exhaust system? Is the engine losing power? How old is the gas? Regardless of the color, smoke is a symptom, not a cause. If it only quits when it's hot, it's probably an electrical issue. Maybe a bad coil or ignition trigger (assuming it's electronic and not points)? I have a DR mower with the 17HP Kawasaki engine, and it's been great. Sits most of the time with Stabil and E0 in the tank though. The good news is that your new helper had enough common sense to stop using the mower and get your help. Starting to sound like he might be a keeper.

Of the four items ordered last Saturday with free Amazon Prime two day shipping, one arrived Monday, two arrived yesterday (two days late), and I'm still waiting on the last. FWIW, the only one I really needed quickly was what showed up yesterday, and today I have to make a town run and won't get a chance to use it until tomorrow. Not a very sterling recommendation for Prime...

Had a chance to poke around the Social Security web site this morning, to answer my curiosity on when to start collecting benefits. They have a few useful calculators up there, and between them I was able to figure out my lifetime benefit as a function of when I start collecting and when I shuffle off to meet my maker. Here are the notes I made, which include URLs to the more useful pages:

Full Retirement Age: Born in 1956: 66 years, 4 months

Retirement Age % Benefit Received Estimated Benefit
62 73.3% $1870.00
63 78.3% $1988.00
64 84.4% $2143.00
65 91.1% $2313.00
66 yr, 4 mo. 100.0% $2538.00
70 $3280.00

Collecting Expectancy Total SSI
At Age (in years) Years Collected
59 a 24.4 83.4 $480,216
62 22.1 84.1 $495,924
66 yrs 4 mo b 18.8 85.2 $575,618
70 16.2 86.2 $716,352

a Your current age.
b Your normal (or full) retirement age.

As one would expect, the longer one waits to start collecting, the larger the benefit, but then you have to live longer to come out with more at the end. The last table also shows that the longer you live, the better your chances are for living even longer. Makes perfect sense, but I'd never really thought about it in quite that way. Then again, all of these figures came from Gummint calculators, and we all know they'd like to hang onto our money as long as possible, right? Clearly they're betting a lot of us won't make it to 70, otherwise they wouldn't sweeten the pot by almost 50%.

Hang in there gang, tomorrow's Friday!

PS
Sorry about the lousy formatting on the tables above. Apparently TBN is stripping out the spaces that align the columns, and there doesn't appear to be any way to use an HTML table...

Nice sunny day with no humidity only 68 deg. at the moment, it was 60 at 5:30.
TxDon I'm not retired yet and 15 projects behind! And to make matters worse my wife keeps finding more fore me and they are not cheap.
Now that I am well on the way with the boat project ( by the time I am done I could have purchased new larger boat I know it was wife's fathers boat) she now has a water front cottage in her sights and will have me heading to the bank in 10 minuets.
Redneck I have you by a year, 1955, with my family history and having one heart attack 14 years ago I'm going to wait for 100% for SS. With my pension I won't get much any way from Uncle Sam they will only be looking to take more from me.
Drew I gave up an a garden this year after the deer wiped me out 2 years in a row, 100 tomato plants 2 years ago along with everything else in the garden thinking about raised bed next year myself. Have you made it out to the boat much?

72°F and .38 inches rain last 24 hours.

Good progress on my project yesterday.
Have to take time today with wife's craftsman mower which has developed a free spinning blade. Hopefully a simple tightening and nothing serious. Probably replace the belt on the scag that suddenly shredded just before we left on our trip.

Be safe
Have a great day
