Mostly-are those going to be used for food or fertilizer?

Ok, time for a boating and fishing story, told this a number of years back.
On the topic of carp...

Wife and I living the dream on my 46 Bertram in a nice marina in N. Miami just off the Intracoastal.
The Intracoastal Canal/ICW there is like a watery street in between sky scrapers. Gazillion dollar homes line the ICW,
marvelous for looking at in the rubber dinghy we carried on our larger boat. It was a cheap little dinghy but worked fine until I
wrecked it dragging it over coral in the Abacos. But this happened when it was brand new and had its high quality Tohatsu
3.5hp outboard on the back. So we leave the Turnberry Isle marina in Aventura and go out into the waterway/street where there's lots of cross traffic
and every kind of boat going by, including very large yachts. Might has right and have to be very careful with small dinghy.

I have little experience fishing and it really isn't my thing, though catch and release seems like a great idea.
The problem is/was that I had no idea how to identify the fish even with my handy dandy laminated full color fish guide.
I mean if it looks like a normal fish you eat it, right?

My wife wants to drag a lure for fun, so we put a bobber out the back, got over to the side of the waterway, turned off the motor and just sat there ourselves,
lightly bobbing in the wakes of the passing boats. A constant boat show in front of us.
All of a sudden I hear the reel engage and I grabbed onto the rod. Whoa.
Forget trying to reel it in, it was dragging me, the rod, and the dinghy over towards deeper water in the middle of the channel.
Which surely was not where I wanted to be with that 8 foot rubber boat. As disaster scenarios flashed by my eyes I lunged for the outboard after handing the pole to my
wife, and thank goodness that reliable little Tohatsu fired right up and then I dragged the fish back over to the side. With wide eyes at the big boats going by, who I'm sure thought I was some
fool boating where I shouldn't have been. And let my wife reel it in and I netted it. She was the nurse, I let her do the hook...
Nice looking 24" fish, had no idea what it was.

We put the fish filets on the barbecue and immediately I was hit with an unpleasant smell that did not bode well for dinner.
But I cooked it anyway and neither one of us could eat two bites of it. Strong and just plain awful.
Turns out it was some type of carp used down there only for bait fish since no one, including the poor, eats it.
But we did....sigh.

I think the Asian carp are eaten as regular fish overseas but maybe they make kimche or something equally horrible
tasting out of it.

So now we electrocute them. Must be hard on the fish already there.

We once went out scuba diving and my friend speared a large blackfish. He went flying past us with this fish into the boat channel. Who needs one of those underwater scooters
He had to let the fish off and lost his spear.

Karp are ok when boiled until the bones break down, My grandmother used to make this, she was from Denver, but the family is from Eastern Europe. Tasted ok, but was kind of grey. Not your typical food color :)

Thanks for the story Drew. Sounds like an interesting, albeit scary day.

Our alarm company is supposed to be coming out this week to upgrade our equipment, for free I'm told.
I was getting those notices, too, Paul. They said the cellular modem needed to be replaced because the carriers were no longer supporting whatever radio was in the old one. The old system was getting really cranky and unreliable, and they wanted big bucks to upgrade it, and then of course more dollars every month to monitor it. Just another reason to move on to better and less expensive technology.

Ken, that carp was like a bad shad, and you go to the Lambertville Shad Fest, and eat
that oily dark bony fish and please please eat my portion too....

I really don't like fish with bones unless like you say you boil them down to the stuff you get in
little tin cans drenched in olive oil.

Salmon, tuna, trout, wahoo, so many other better choices...
Ocean scallops in garlic butter, shrimp in cajun sauce, lobster poorboy, now why
would I want to eat an oily bony fish?

Put a nasty dead fish in a crockery pot two feet underground for several months
and mix it in with some rotting vegetables. I'm not sure your cat would eat that.
But that's someone else's ice cream sundae. Everyone goes home happy.

I'm off to give my first tater haircut. Leaves getting a little close to electric fence so need to keep that side trimmed.
sun is out, sky is bright blue

   / Good morning!!!! #132,965
50F and partly cloudy @ 10:30 ... but it sure looks awfully bright out there to me. That's a two degree warm up in about 10 minutes ... so I hope we're going to beat the predicted high of only 53F today. That's about 20 degrees below normal for this time of year.

Likely head out here in a few and start on Round 2 of the aerating while the yard is still wet enough. Although it's pretty cool out, the sun should help make it seem warm. Maybe do some mowing while I'm at it.

Hang up suet feeders before I head out.

Eddie's Bait finally called me back on the mealworms this morning but I missed the call, so need to give them a call back and see what's up.

May start on the disassembly of the Chapin spreader so the new metal frame piece can be put on when they arrive. May give them a call back and see if I can get a tracking number for the shipment.

Probably try and get the golf cart unloaded from the van and moved over to the barn for now. Engine, carb, and such needs to go up to the shop.

Of course, the sprayer needs brought over to the house before I move the cart over there.

Need to get the sparrow and critter live traps set up as well.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable, productive, and safe day ... (y)

65°F and .28 inches rain. A beautiful morning.

Happy Hour turned into Happy several Hours. I don’t think anyone wanted it to end. Very enjoyable face to face time. 🤙🤙🤙
Of course some wanted to see my progress of caretaker suite and 1 guy has great interest in my greenhouse fittings.
Put the Zoom meeting up on the big TV.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day

Pretty blue sky and 68, should be about 74 but it ain’t bad.

We had a large funeral yesterday for Cpl Heacook with over three thousand law enforcement officers in attendance. I don’t see any National coverage, but then it didn’t check the right boxes. He was killed by an unarmed black man, so no cop killing a black man, no assault rifles, none of the points the media wants to make. It doesn’t matter that he probably saved an elderly couple or that he leaves a 12 year old son behind, he’s the wrong color in the wrong job.

We were sort of the opposite. Had a land line security system.

We canceled the land line (saved $60/month) and the security company upgraded the system to cellular for free. But, the quarterly monitoring fee went up $5. The installer said it was much easier for the company to monitor via cellular than a land line.

Nice day but a little cool. I have been putting the wool base layer away and then getting them back out. Got the back yard mowed yesterday and did the front yard today.

Have you guys seen the stories about "shot and a chaser" shot clinics. No telling what people will do for free beer. The place I got my shot might have had a water fountain.;) Maybe I should have waited till they are paying you money to get a shot.

I would not be surprised if that happened.

Here there are no lines and politicians are begging people to get their shots. Mass vaccination sites are ghost towns.

So sad. No, didn’t hear about it till now, but then I don’t watch the news since it’s so atrocious. Thanks for mentioning it.

Edit- AAPD did attend and posted on their FB page, I just now made the connection.

IMHO the incentive is already out there. Public Health.
It’s personal choice to get the vaccine, I respect that. Even more so if there is a valid medical reason not to.

It’s also a personal choice to accept all the benefits that have been made available, stimulus checks, PPE, unemployment plus ups, non eviction protection, tax benefits, etc, etc. if you personally chose to accept one of those then that choice should include getting the vax unless a valid medical exception. Maybe next year the IRS can have a validation question.

One thing that ticks me off is the media. Almost nightly our news will interview someone choosing not to get vaccinated. One of the latest: “Well, I’m over 40 years old, only gotten the flu twice my whole life. So I’m pretty healthy. I don’t see a need to get vaccinated” end of interview.
Never does the interviewer ask about protection of other people.

NOTE - And if ANYONE choses to make this into a political comment vs health safety I definitely will not respond.

Sounds like something is wrong with the unloader valve on your Speedair, Kyle.
Well, I have found out that, even with the belt off, the motor will sometimes just buzz and not turn. Internal starter circuit, which utilized to centrifugal weights attached to the contacts.
"Anyone been to the Cabernet Grill in Fredericksburg TX?"

Yep ..many times. We have a weekend in Fredericksburg in the spring and again in the Fall. Our Saturday evening dinner is almost always at the CG. I tried their CF Ribeye once but normally have their ribeye and Patricia likes their flounder .. we both go with a side of asparagus.

It not actually in Fredericksburg .. it's SW of town, out Highway 16 just past the county fairgrounds.

Speaking of CFS .. we'll be serving about 400 of them next Saturday evening at our VFD Fundraiser .. postponed from May 1st weather.
Fredericksburg has turned into a tourist trap. But that CFS looks good. I love them, but rarely eat them now.
Kyle - how is your son feeling today?
Thanks for asking, he's better. Going back to school tomorrow. School has a "no fever for 24 hours" policy.
Good Morning! 65˚F cloudy NE light wind.
A quick grocery shopping this morning for the "Menu" in our new FOK meal planner subscription and app. some of the meals and snacks this week include:
Aloo Gobi
warm spinach salad
curry spiced popcorn
cincinnati chili
Chocolate berry bites
Layered Greek Bean dip
Lemony asparagus stir fry over rice
Fruit beer float

Kyle we still have signs on the store doors in town that mask are mandatory and there is about 98% compliance. In Taylor HEB there were no signs about mask and about 75% still wore mask.
aloo gobi???

Our Walmart still has a mask policy. I wear one, but I see about 90% compliance. Many pull them down below their nostrils.

Prayers for those in need and our Country desperately needs prayer. Glad tractor arguing is staying light hearted, because we are such veterans... :)

41F and clear @ 22:30, heading down to a low of 35F in the overnight.

Called Eddie's back and spoke to his daughter, they had large containers of mealworms in stock ... so I went ahead and ran down picked them up ... along with some red worms.

Filled mealworm feeders front and back after I got back from Eddie's.

Got all fish and cats fed.

Then headed outside to mow and aerate, think I got a little better than half of the front (upper and lower) done ... just the drier, upland parts, which were still pretty wet.

Decided to knock off because the temps were starting to fall, was back down into the 40's when I quit, and with 12 mph wind gusts out of the northwest it was feeling pretty chilly.

Probably try and finish the front up tomorrow afternoon, once it warms up some, and depending on how wet the lower sections are. Can probably get around the house if the front is too wet.

I did go back out and collect plugs from three different spots to do soil testing. They're presently drying.

Woman made Thai Chicken in a curry peanut sauce with carrots, peas, green beans, and corn for dinner this evening, was very good.

Fell asleep on couch after dinner, first time in quite awhile that that has happened.

Remembered to bring in suet feeders after I woke up.

Woman says she wants golf cart painted construction vest neon green.

... ahhh ... ok ...

Not entirely sure at this point if that is the - definitive - answer or not.

Hope everyone had a great day ... (y)

Chris
It's already happening here in Shasta County. I heard on the news today that you got a $25 gift certificate if you got your shot. That's tragic when you stop to think that back in March, people were paying a hundred times that to skip to the head of the line. Maybe it's time we just stepped back and let Darwin take the lead...
