My wife has no desire to cozy up to any bears in the neighborhood!
The little critter is a weasel. They turn white during the winter. That one still has
a bit of brown fur left. The photos were taken on Dec. 24, 2012, but no snow on
the ground at that time. Later that winter, we saw him several times peaking up
out of the snow banks in the same area that the photos were taken. If you
search out 'weasel' on google, you'll see many photos of them and they can be
very vicious when seeking food.

WE had weasels all over when I was growing up in northeastern NC, they would catch chickens and rip the throats out. They would get them at night on the nest or roost. Mom said they were bad in Alabama where she and dad grew up as well. I'm sure they're here, but I haven't seen one in 42 years.

Got cold over night,, but warming into the 60's today, then 3-4 days in the 70's. Welcome back spring, I missed you something awful!

I've been describing all the "end of the line" products I've been seeing in the local meat market, very different than in PA.
I must admit to having grown up with a father who liked some interesting foods, like horribly smelly kippered herring, which he cooked in a pan and stunk up the entire house, and cow's tongue. Tongue and mustard, tongue and mustard. Somehow I got it down but I think in my teens I just couldn't swallow it any more. Not much for organ meat either. Reminds me of eating a catfish, a bottom feeder that eats all the pcbs at the bottom of the polluted river. I always wonder what's "left" in the liver I'm eating. Haven't eaten that in a while either.

Reminds me I need to eat more salmon. Have a fish store I want to check out and that's my next buy. Will get a big piece and freeze a couple dinner's worth.
Fish is so expensive...not quite as durable I suppose as Farmer's chickens.
I eat chicken at least two or three times a week in some fashion, trying to keep Farmer in demand.

Any of us raise cattle for market?
Don't be dissin' my catfish!:D I love me some catfish, but all I eat is farm raised, if that's any better.

Mountain passes to the east all require either chains or 4WD with snow tires this morning, so it's south we go. Even with that, I'll be in rain until Bakersfield. Hoping for Flagstaff by tonight, but that's probably optimistic.

Last time I was in Flagstaff was 1972, I left Stockton in the afternoon and spent a few hours at a motel in Flagstaff. I woke up to my portable radio, thinking the man said it was 7:15 I jumped in the shower and hit the road, only to find out it was still only around 5:30 AM. The sun rises early on top of the mountain! I was so tired, I went north instead of east, when I realized it I worked my way back toward I40. There was a pow wow in the area, I picked up a chief and later one of his friends and dropped them off at a council house. Nice guys, but them and the buffalo took the same number of baths! Anyway, I got back to I40/66 right at Winslow, just as, you guessed it, The Eagles came on the radio... One of those moments in life that you always remember.

Good morning, back to work after 2 weeks of vacation. Daytona 500 was a great experience and the cruise was also great. On a sad note, a man from Texas that I met on the cruise with his mother, had too many demons and jumped overboard late Friday night. Have not heard if they have recovered his body yet. Sad, sad story.

67°F and no rain last 24 hours.

Got most of the mowing done, likely finish today.
An enjoyable visit with a couple from Alien's neck of the world, Brisbane. They are staying with us via HomeExchange. We hope to visit Australia in a few years and will stay their place.

Be safe
Have a great day

Well all and all nice day, Cloudy but hit 60 on The North Bluff so I am good with that. I removed the snow chains from the tractor and the Gator. Washed the Gator and did some lane repair with the tractor. Going to need a pile of gravel soon if I want to keep up with the lane. Two spots got real soft and ate most of the pile firming them up.

Good afternoon all. 62F, cloudy and windy this morning. Mist/fog set in by the time choir practice was done, streets have been wet all day. Only a couple of showers so far, more rain tomorrow. Dog sitting today, with a bit more consulting work to do.

Yes it seems Dollar General is trying to be one every 2 to 3 miles mostly on ten year leases built and leased by developer to stores specifications

Years ago part of our land was fields for cows albeit steep but over the years has been taken over by jack pines. Because of the large amount of shale rock they grow with very shallow roots and once they get a little size over they go. The area I'm working on now is more of a large ditch and once it's cleared will bring in about 50 or so loads of dirt and plant in grass maybe a nice oak tree as well. This is on the way up to our storage building which houses the tractor Z-Turn etc. good exercise tree cutting is.

Tonight worked for about 30 minutes with mini ex and down about six inches ran into vein of shale. Tough digging that is but very relaxing for me

My BIL shared a neat little bit of information on the Dollar General stores. He studied them in business school. Their business model is to market towards single mothers. So they get the latest census data and that's how they choose where to build their stores.

Always found that interesting.

Around here lots of folks go to the dollar store first, then to the grocery for what they couldn't find. To me it is not worth that extra stop to save a buck or two.

I always like people who shop at three or four different grocery stores in the vein of saving money. For .50 cents or $1.00 what they burn in fuel and wear and tear on their vehicle more than out ways what they save

My does it because she can't find everything she wants at one, but they're only a mile apart.

Growing up there was 3 grocery stores in about 2 miles. One had the best prices on most items so we shopped there and it was beside Walmart so we'd walk over for the non grocery items needed. Another grocery had the best selection of meat with the better prices so we'd stop there. The third store, farthest away, was were we went when the other two didn't have something we needed. Like a special ingredient.

Now we have two grocery stores and a super Walmart in about a mile. But Walmart get most everyone's business. The others just don't compete. But they have better meat selections. Being we buy very little meat it's not worth the trip. Most of our meat is home raised. My wife uses the dollar stores for the one item trips that she doesn't feel like fighting the Walmart crowd for.

34 right now (feels a bit warmer though) and a high of 53 today. This should melt the rest of the snow and ice. Boy, this time last year I had a good 5-6 inches of frozen snow covering the yard. That wasn't all gone until May.

I'm a few degrees below you Roy. Drinking water for the sheep iced over again, although not as bad as I had been expecting. For a second or two I thought the outside tap, which is well sheltered, was frozen too, until I remembered I had turned the outside water supply off again last night as a precaution.

It was sunshine all the way yesterday, first time this year that the hot water tank was heated completely by solar. Also first time this year that I completed all my scheduled jobs for the day ( it helps that I'm learning to set my expectations low, even by my own lowly standards  ).

Up early, can't sleep. Big storms on the way here. They worry me.

Had the kids help me in the garden. Planted some strawberries again. Never have luck with those. Also planted some sunflowers on the west edge hoping for evening shade for the rest of the plants.

Have a good day all.
