Good morning. A thin layer of ice on the top of the drinking troughs this morning, easy enough to break. Not like last year, when I had to hammer away at the pond to get drinking water. Now one of those A10's would have come in handy for that...

Drew, when growing up my wife and myself were quite happy to be served up cold cow's stomach (flat tripe, or honeycomb) that had been soaking overnight in milk, together with a slice of bread an butter for tea. I also asked her what she thought of chittlings (from cattle) and the face she pulled agreed with my memories too. Even kids who were mostly grateful for any food had their limits.

Noticed yesterday that visibility when pulling out from the gateway onto the road in the tractor is getting poor, mostly due to the holly in the hedge. I need to cut it all back before the birds start nesting and hopefully will get on with that later today.

I've been describing all the "end of the line" products I've been seeing in the local meat market, very different than in PA.
I must admit to having grown up with a father who liked some interesting foods, like horribly smelly kippered herring, which he cooked in a pan and stunk up the entire house, and cow's tongue. Tongue and mustard, tongue and mustard. Somehow I got it down but I think in my teens I just couldn't swallow it any more. Not much for organ meat either. Reminds me of eating a catfish, a bottom feeder that eats all the pcbs at the bottom of the polluted river. I always wonder what's "left" in the liver I'm eating. Haven't eaten that in a while either.

Reminds me I need to eat more salmon. Have a fish store I want to check out and that's my next buy. Will get a big piece and freeze a couple dinner's worth.
Fish is so expensive...not quite as durable I suppose as Farmer's chickens.
I eat chicken at least two or three times a week in some fashion, trying to keep Farmer in demand.

Any of us raise cattle for market?

31 and frosty going to 65.

Had a great time last night with dinner guests over. Don, your wife would have been welcome...too far to drive for shepherds' pie. Hope she enjoyed the finale..."happily ever after" endings for all.

Eric, you've reminded me I need to do some trimming before the birds nest...although based on the wrens on our porch, I may be too late for some birds.

Drinking first cup of coffee. 58° with mostly clear skies this morning. Heading to 70° with partly cloudy skies. Couple days of cool down. The back to the 80°. I am all caught up on my projects for now. Nothing is planned for the day. Maybe BBQ some ribs.
Good Morning All.

Any of us raise cattle for market?

My Mom and Dad do (with my help), and I lease my land out for cattle production of "organic cows". They are not sold as organic grass fed angus calves they are just sold at the auction as stocker calves for about $1.60 a pound. So I guess the answer to you question is "kinda".

Good Morning! 65˚ cloudy looking for rain later. My wife wants a battery operated weed trimmer for around the house so we will check ot the EGO to match her mower and blower. I would have never thought a battery mower would be good out here but it defiantly works good for her which makes it really work good for me.

Wngsprd, The ending was just a happy ending, like a fairy tail.

The curbing for the paver walk which curves around the rose garden, for easy mowing, is complete and has been inspected (pic). Next is compacting and leveling getting a nice bed for the paver placement - if the rains hold off.

56 this morning and headed to 68 today.

I had planned on sowing some grass seed today but it's awfully windy to be using a broadcast cone spreader. I do have one field I never got bush hogged last fall. So I may go do that instead. If the wind dies I'll work on the seeding.

Drew. I also raise beef cattle. Run a mostly black herd.

Don, nice work and I love your Chief Inspector!
A feline code enforcer...

ok, $1. 60 to the cattle farmer, I have zero problems with that, but
why am I paying $4.00 a pound for hamburger? $12.00 a pound for a good quality steak?
Though if one looks at a manufacturing model, the price of most widgets are sure more than doubled when the customer gets it,
so the $4 beef product doesn't seem out of line by that comparison. It's white meat chicken breasts at $2 a pound that amaze me.
Chicken is so cheap and beef at least how it's marketed in these parts is really expensive. And pork is in the middle of course.
I guess I'm old enough that 4 bucks a pound for hamburger seems crazy high, when it really isn't compared to other foods now.

Drew, the price has dropped starting in January. The calves were getting around $2.00 lb. before Christmas. You might see lower cost at your end in a month, unless greed takes over. We know trasport cost are down because of decreased fuel cost.

Drew. Here's an example of the beef market system.

The cow calf producer sells at 500lbs and gets $1.60/pound. The stocker then sells at 800lbs and gets $1.40/pound. The feedlot then sells at 1350lbs and gets $1.20/pound. Then the packer sells to the supermarket and then to you. You pay $4/ pound. Must also consider dressing percentage on beef is about 50%. So the packers cost goes from $1.20 to $2.40 as soon as the animal is killed.

Good Morning! 47F @ 6:00AM. Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm during the morning, then some lingering showers still possible this afternoon. High around 55F. Winds N at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 100%.

Mountain passes to the east all require either chains or 4WD with snow tires this morning, so it's south we go. Even with that, I'll be in rain until Bakersfield. Hoping for Flagstaff by tonight, but that's probably optimistic.

Yes, a real tear jerker Downton last night. Wish it could have kept going, but nothing lasts forever.

Have a great week everyons!

Good morning,
51, cloudy heading to 58 Chance of rain and 60s next four days. Thinking of removing the chains from the tractor but still early. I took off the snow plow yesterday and put the bucket on for pothole filling.
TXDon, your cat looks like our George.

Good Morning. 0820, sunny, 58F with 79% humidity. Forecast high of 76F with no chance of rain today, and a low of 53F tonight. I got the disc on the 3930 yesterday and cut up the garden. Plan is to start planting this morning. But I went to bed with a bad sore throat, and it got worse during the night. Not too much sleep, and a late night at work tonight. So I'm going to ease into the garden.

Drew, I was in the cattle business most of my life. I got out of it 14 years ago when Daddy died. Mamma stuck it out until 7-8 years ago, and Sister and BIL got rid of their cows 3-4 years ago. Sometimes I miss it, but then I remind myself how good it feels to wake up on a freezing morning and not have to think about getting the tractor out to bring up hay.

You guys have a good one,

Larro

Off to start another Dollar General this morning

Down here in NW Florida Dollar Stores are popping up like mushrooms after a rain. Heck, we have two in Altha, the same number as flashing caution lights.

15 trees down 11 more to go but running out of brush pile storage space

We cut around 300 trees here, and another hundred after building and moving in. I drug a lot of them into the woods, cut others into smaller burning size and gave it away, but nobody wants skinny crooked pine trees.:D

Yep, just an experiment. I much prefer them off our smoker. It's supposed to rain all next week so, since I will be doing inside shop projects and smoker is at the shop may do a brisket and some ribs on the smoker too.

Pressure cooker does a good job on brisket as well, but low and slow is still the best. I actually have an electric smoker that someone gave me, it works better than expected, using the right chips I can't tell the difference between it and my charcoal unit. It's small, but handy because it's a bit easier to maintain constant temps on, but it will cool off on real cold days.
