Glow Plug Use

I have an '89 JD 1070. It was in the low 50's the other morning when I went to start my tractor. I wasn't sure if one needs to use the glow plugs at that temp but I figured it wouldn't hurt. When I went to start it, it just rolled over but didn't fire. Now, this tractor ALWAYS starts so I was confused. I let it sit a few minutes and then she started right up. Was I wrong to use the glow plugs or was there possibly another issue?

I don't know what caused the tractor to not start. I would think it would always start with glo plugs no matter the weather.

As for when you NEED glo plugs, I never use them unless it it below zero deg F. My tractor sits in a unheated shed. It will even start then but it starts easier with the count of 5 on the glo plugs.

It depends on the tractor, we have a Kubota L3830 that only needs the plugs when it is below 30F. We also have a Kubota B7500 that needs the plugs every time you start with a non-warmed up engine, even when it is 90 out.
