get this flail mower ??

Guys ive run across a 5 ft bush hog brand flail mower in good mechanical shape for $500 ..... guy says he paid $1800 for it and hardly used it.

I have only used brush cutters so far with my tractor work. The reason the flail mower caught my eye was it wont hang off the end of my trailer as the bush hog does when I transport... 75% of the area I upkeep is rocky back filled fields.
Sounds like a good price on this flail mower from what Ive googled, but will it work ok in the mostly rocky fields or is it more suited to clean "pasture type" land ?

As long as you lower the rear roller to raise the cutting height a
little bit you will be fine with your mowing chores.

Once you use the flail mower you will never go back to a rotary cutter.



Please PM with any questions or place them on the forum here and
you will have plenty of help AND you can still get parts for it.

If you have not fone it already please read through the flail mower
posts and threads here on the forum and you will be very well versed
on flail mowers. I believe I also posted a parts and operators manual
here as well or I have it loaded on my lap top.

All V belts and bearings are metric and are available locally.
The side slicer mowing knives are available from Flail Master,
Bush Hog, or Cutters Choice from what I remember.

Used a bush hog for years. Found a good flail (BEFCO) that was priced right and forgot the bush hog. Flail is easier to move around, cuts better and doesn't throw stuff 100 yards. I still use the bush hog for saplings in the woods but that's all.
Buy it!!

thanks for the quick responses ... im trying to find out now if its a true 5 ft cut, or if he is measuring 5 ft as the total width of the case making it a 4 ft cut. I looked on bush hog's web site but couldnt find any flail mowers listed to see if they even made one smaller than 5 ft

Go to the messicks web site to look at ALL the Bush Hog flail mower manuals.


its either an FH60 or an FM60 flail mower measured by the flail mowers
rotor width, so no worries there and you will have a good mower.

The ID tag will also define which model it is.

picked it up couple of hours ago ... havent cleaned off the tag to see which model it is yet . will check on that tomorrow .... The one noticeable difference I see in it from the Alamo flail mower I looked at before is the cutters .... this one has what looks like flat bar blades in a semi J ... the alamo had what looked more like a much more HD weighted chisel type head on it.

You have what are referred to as "side slicer knives" on your flail mower.

There are several types of flail mower knives or hammers made for the
flail mower market world wide.

The Alamo mower you are referring to may have the scoop type knives which
are mistaken for hammer knives used in forestry.



The side slicers are made in two specific grade types which are the standard duty
side slicer knive and the hardened side slicer knive.


Only 17,884 mowers to go.

Here is a pic of it... no model # visible on the decals as they are too faded to read..... there is a stamped S# tag on it though. It has a couple of cracks in it that will need welded up and I think im going to move it over to the offset position and give it a try
