Generator Selection?

Copper wire has gone nuts. A roll of 10/3 romex is nearly $470.00Thats insane.

was a little over $200 last year.

i just looked at cablemaster supply, where i used to purchase 10 conductor generator cable. a 250 foot roll is 40% more money than it was since my last order 18 months ago. I picked a good time to retire.

Here in NE WA - I'm on Inland Power & Light. Been FANTASTIC service for 40+ years. Only one extended outage ( 28 hr ) in all those years. Sooo...... I've never considered any type of whole-house generator.

I do have a small Honda generator that I take out on the property when I need to use my corded tools. My generator - whatever tools - 25' extension cord. All in the bed of my ATV - off I go.

I have followed '1 solution fits all' generator sales/installs.
Unless the home is thoughtfully designed for that, it is not a good choice to have a non-user select the 12/16 circuits that are 'important'. (One house they did not pickup the kitchen refrigerator - DOH!)
If I was involved at all (design/user), and there was no real emergency situation (actual life support) it would be a manual transfer switch (great for working on stuff), cord and plug, and manual start (maybe battery, but not 'sensing'). Worse case you lose 8 hours sleeping.
