Don't do it!

Spend a tiny little bit more money, maybe $1,500, and you can get a X720. It's way more machine than the X540, for almost the same price. One big plus, it is a fuel injected engine, not carb'd like the X540 is.

Why pay $8,500 for an X540 when an X720 is probably $9,500 - $10,000? If you can't afford an X758, and you need to go with a cheaper option, I don't see a reason to step into the X500 series when the X720 will be almost the same price.
Just called to get a price on the 730 (720 not available in canada). About $1800 more then the 540...EFI would be nice, but heck....thats the way it goes throughout the whole lineup. There's always something better if i spend just a little more. Just to much of a price diff. Remember...these are canadian prices. For some reason manufacturers insist, us canadians grab our ankles

I have an x720 and it is a fantasitic machine but so isn't the x540 again depending on you real needs versus wants. Have you considered a very new, used machine? I would guess that a new x730 would be north on $10,000 whereas a used x720 could be had for around $8500 with low hours.
Havent seen anything used that i would consider.

Trying to get a extra set of blades or a maintenance kit for the first oil change thrown into the deal. So far, no luck. Those guys are tight. Wonder how they respond if i walk out the door because of it......We'll see.....Wife hates it when i do that, but i embarrass her on a regular basis anyway.

The Ultimate series has the $1000 off right now if you can find one left over. I'm sure they are out there. There's also $700 ($500+$200) on the Signature series. I can only assume that these are North America programs and not US only.

The 7 series is well worth the extra $$ in my opinion. The shaft drive decks are just fantastic and the new HC decks are just plain awesome.

I guess! Just three weeks ago, I purchased a 2013 x758 (4wd, diesel) with a 54" HC deck, Rear Quick Hitch, Click-N-Go Brackets, and Rear Receiver Hitch Kit for $12,000 even, plus PA sales tax of course.

The dealer even gave me a new mower deck belt because the original got frayed a little when they engaged the mower for the first time. (the belt was threaded under one of the pulleys rather than properly seated in the pulley). I figure I can still run the original belt for quite some time before needing to replace it with the band new belt.

Well......for 12k, i'd buy it in a heartbeat. Wouldn't even have to think about it. Just cut the cheque

It isn't too much difference, and here is why.

If you spend another $1,800 in the same line-up of machine, no, you don't get much more. in THIS case, spending $1,800 more, gets you into an entirely different category of machine, and your getting twice as much tractor, for only $1,800 more. When $1,800 gets you into the next category with twice the machine, it's a no brainer. If $1,800 only moves you up within the X500 line-up, than no, you aren't gaining a lot.

Went to a dealer an hour away from us late yesterday because they have a 540 and a sold 7. Drove the 540 around and so did the wife. Looked the 7 over and had the sales guy start it up. Wanted to hear it run, since i haven't heard the small diesel yet. Was surprised at how noisy it was.
Been thinking....the 730, has EFI/HC deck/drive over deck/shaft driven deck and blower/
Calling dealers later this morning for a few more prices.
Thanks kDiesel and JDTank for helping spend more money :)
I am trying to get this mower purchase right. I want to buy the right machine. They are expensive and i sure don't want to do that again anytime soon.

Here are the numbers that helped me pick my new mower
X540: 54 Deck/ Blower/chains and weights = 11,820 out the door
X730: 54 Deck/ Blower = 17,204 OTD

$ 5384 difference. I don't want the 730 that bad and ordered the 540. Pics will follow when i have it early next week.

Everything in canada is much more then in the usa.Crazy prices for sure. And they dont bend at all. Cant get a free spare belt with it even....

That will be a fine machine for you, and I'm sure will give you years of trouble free operation.

Pete,

Congrats on the X540. I am sure that you will be completely happy with it. I had one for awhile and really liked it.

It is easy for us to spend someone else's money. The important thing is to buy what you need and only you can determine that.

That carbed Kawi motor purrs like a kitten and the 54 Edge deck does a fine job. Enjoy!!

"My" dealer got the X540 from it's sister dealer this morning, cleaned it up and delivered to me about noon today. I asked the delivery guy if it's ready to be used and he said yes, the other dealer prepped it already and all they did was wash it, and left. Here i am, standing there admiring my new toy. Got looking at the clear transmission fluid container, between the rear wheels and noticed that there is no fluid showing between the low-full marks.
Figured it must be clear fluid, but i better check it anyway. Well...it was dry! Called them and they send a guy out to fill it. So far, I'm not very impressed and wonder what damage it would have caused if i would have taken his word for it and went ahead and cut 2 acres of grass....
So, now that the fluids are topped off i figured it's cutting time. Turned the key for the first time and see the fuel gauge is on empty. Thinking, what cheap buggers they are and filled it up. Started it up and the fuel gauge is still on empty. Now I'm irritated......it's 4.45 and i still haven't cut any grass. Called the dealer back again and asked him if there is a secret key position to get the fuel gauge to work.....
He wanted to know if i want somebody to come and look at it or if i want them to come pick it up to check it out at the dealership. Told them to just come get it in the morning. I might just tell them to keep it.
This mower has been sitting on the lot and has .5 hours on it. Somebody been testdriving it (including me, at the other dealer) without transmission fluid in it. At least not enough of it. Man...this has me spooked now! My first John Deer and this is a bad start. Thinking it's the dealer's fault, but still...
I know it's not a 150k big tractor and is peanuts for a Deer dealer, but they should put a little more pride in it anyway.
Does anybody see a problem with it? Should i take it back when they get the fuel gauge fixed or cancel the cheque?
Any other things to look out for???

No excuse for that - that is simple dumb stuff that should have been done. Have to admit the whole "thanks for picking it up and keep it while you are at it" would be pretty high on my list also. I know it is only a 1/2 hour but still with no fluid why risk it? I am guessing you checked the engine oil but if not I sure would. Sounds like the other dealer never went over it and this one didn't bother to make a couple checks to make sure it was done. Deere is a good product but a bad dealer will spoil the entire experience. Sorry to hear this did not start off better - you made a good decision with a quality product, may just need to fine tune the purchase a bit! Good luck

Man, this is a very bad beginning I would not accept that machine. You will never trust it now.
