Gas or Diesel

Ahh yes the circular debate,, gas or diesel very similar to another circular debate of gear or hydro,, both usually have the same outcome,,, lots of back and forth, pages of "mines better than yours" and no conclusive data to state one is superior. So the BIG question IS did the OP buy something or did he post this just to get everyones feathers up????????????????????????????

I've been wondering the same thing:)

Not my intend to ruffle anybody's feathers. Thanks to you all for your opinions and advise. I have not made a decision of yet. I was bound and bend on a X700 series when i started this thread. Since then, sanity has prevailed and I'm also looking at cheaper and lesser mowers. Decided that 18 grand is more then i want to spend, but I'm known to change my mind.
If i was getting a X700, it would be the diesel 4wd.

Priced out a X540 this am. $ 8320 plus tax. About 8k less then the X758. That buys a lot of chrome for my bike. Even buys a 120R engine......

I had a bid of $9500 for a x740 with 60" 7 iron and ended up spending right at $10k for a x750 with 60" HC deck with Auto Connect.

Impossible to do apples to apples on a 7 vs 5 series but if I back out the Auto connect and down to a 54" deck that puts it at $9500 again

No need for AWD here.

Diesels and 4wd are more of a "chick magnet". I rest my case.:cool2:

I only paid 11700.00 for a x739 with brush guard about 2 weeks ago.

A lot of people fall back on old knowledge that was relevant years ago.

The yesteryear problems of diesel engines are almost completely gone.

Fuel gelling is of no concern in these machines unless you live in northern Alaska at -60. If you live in an area where winter conditions apply, your local fuel is treated before it hits the gas station. There is summer fuel, and winter fuel, all over North America. Winter fuel is, you guessed it, formulated specifically for cold weather operation.

Moisture, again, on these machines, I doubt it would ever become an issue. Your only holding 25 liters of fuel here. We are not talking about 1,000 liters. If you stored your tractor for years without so much as looking at it, with lots of empty space in the fuel tank, sure, you might have a moisture issue. If you burn your fuel on even a remotely regular basis, no worries.

I do not run any additives in my X740, and I likely never will. With the diesel fuel we get today, and considering how small these machines are, additives are dollar bills coming out of the exhaust. Someone mentioned the diesels leave soot on the hood. I have just under 30 hours on my X740, with not one wash done yet. I have absolutely zero soot on my hood where my exhaust comes out underneath. It gives one puff of black at start up, and that is it. They burn clean.

Let us all remember these are 24HP garden tractors, and nothing more. Enjoy your machine, whatever you have, instead of worrying about what may or may not ever happen to it.

The SMOKEOUT is a NOT a issue with my 2011 JDX740.Little puff of smoke on start up.My 2008 Kioti diesel is another story on startup little smokey.coobie

I am sure the 10-15 percent ethonol they put in gas is good on your motor also?Do some reading on that.Gas used to stay good for a few months now your lucky if it stays good for 2 weeks unless you use a additive like marine grade stabil or starbrite(goggle that).I have (DIESEL)RTV 900,JD X740,Kioti DK40se and a diesel pickup and have NEVER had any fuel issues. With all due respect(RUBADUB) you posted this same hogwash over at the My tractor forum in the JD garden tractor section and got beat up pretty bad.Just admit you don,t like diesel engines and move on.A parting note to rubadub have you ever owned a diesel truck, tractor?Just curious because you seem to have a lot on knowledge if you have,nt?coobie

I see you got fancy wheelcaps on the front but not on the back tires. Not available or...? And how much??

Coobie...I can't speak for Rubadub, but for me, it is not that I don't like diesels or not. It is a discussion of the advantages of both gas and diesel for this application. I learn a lot of good things about diesels by agruing how good the gas engines are. But for me, there is very little data to back up the agrument either way, ie, a diesel will out last a gas engine, the engine warms up faster (who cares) etc. It seems that the arguments either way are based upon experiences of each of the posters. And lets face it, we all spent $10,000 plus for our garden tractors and we all want to think that we made the best purchase decision. And as JDtank stated, these tractors will outlast us all.

I fully agree with you.The slight Issue I have is when folks make certian statements about diesel equipment that are not really true.coobie

Guess i'll end up with a water-cooled gas engine in a X540. As much as i would have loved to have a 758, just Couldn't justify the price of it.
Going to test drive the 540 tomorrow probably and if the wife likes it, it's a done deal.

Good for you the X540 is a excellent tractor.coobie

Try a Ventrac.

Congrat's the x540 is a great GT. Another advantage of a gas engine GT is that they ride better. Take half of the money that you saved and put into your right rear pocket and then take the remainder and put that into your left rear pocket. With all the cushioning, you'll think that you are floating on air. Post pictures of your new ride.

Don't do it!

Spend a tiny little bit more money, maybe $1,500, and you can get a X720. It's way more machine than the X540, for almost the same price. One big plus, it is a fuel injected engine, not carb'd like the X540 is.

Why pay $8,500 for an X540 when an X720 is probably $9,500 - $10,000? If you can't afford an X758, and you need to go with a cheaper option, I don't see a reason to step into the X500 series when the X720 will be almost the same price.

I have an x720 and it is a fantasitic machine but so isn't the x540 again depending on you real needs versus wants. Have you considered a very new, used machine? I would guess that a new x730 would be north on $10,000 whereas a used x720 could be had for around $8500 with low hours.
