Farm tractor models to avoid

You always hear about a tractor that has problems, but I was looking for a list of models to avoid and why since there is a general consensus that they were a problem poor design. Such as the JD 2840 which is known for problems with cases splitting due to not enough connection bolts and also it's hydraulic problems.

I don't know much about that model but it looks like a 3130 to me. If so.. yes not one of JD's best, There are far worse tractors around though.

Only one that comes to my mind is the JD 2010 built in the 60's. The design was rushed to get it on the market & are known for durability problems with the engine & or transmission.

At this stage in the game, I'd certainly avoid any gas engine powered Ag tractors with 50HP or more. In my experience they're gas hogs and will eat up your bank account if you try to work them hard. Most were designed with 30 cent a gallon fuel in mind.

Somewhere around 35HP seems to be the sweet spot for gas-engined tractors. Above that, it starts going downhill.

It would be interesting to see what a modern gas powered tractor utilizing electronic fuel injection could do. Would probably still fall well short of diesel efficiency.

i do like the looks of the MF utility tractors.

I would avoid FarmTrac simply because there is no active dealer support. Dealers for other tractor brands will sometimes do their best to help you, but that seems to be about the most you can expect for FarmTrac equipment.

I guess I should have made it clear that you have to know what your talking about and not post something you read on the back of a bathroom urinal. IH made some really good models and so did MF not sure why you two posted what you did. I was hoping to make this a serious thread to help people and not have people who didn't know what they were talking about or were biased towards a particular brand post. Next think all green, blue, and red tractors are junk. Thanks.
