You bet! I figured a set of Forks would be more useful in the long run and that a Third Function Kit could wait a bit.

I replaced my old forks with a brand new set of the EA forks.
They are FIRST CLASS ........like everything EA makes!

Before you take your grapple off, shut your tractor off. Then turn ignition to "on" but don't start. Cycle your grapple open / close electrical toggle a time or two. Then disconnect hoses.

The pressure inside the cylinders and hoses on your Grapple is dependent on the outside temperature difference between when you disconnected and when you are trying to reconnect. Hydraulic fluid expands with temperature as do most fluids. So you may need,to relieve the pressure as you mention. On the tractor side, shut down and cycle all the valves to relieve pump pressure to the tank.

I try not to store my Grapples in the sun to minimize that from warming up the fluid.

Now to the problem at hand. Cycling the 3rd function valve with the engine off at disconnect and again at re connect helps a lot but if the cylinders are still under pressure the protrusion from the male fitting can be rapped smartly on a hard surface to relieve the pressure. There is an expensive tool made to do that. Don’t remember the name of it but it was discussed and cussed on this forum a few months ago.

Very good points :thumbsup: If the pressure is there when you go to disconnect you will not be able to disconnect easily so I would relieve the pressure by shutting down and venting to the tank. No sense disconnecting with pressure in the lines.

To summarize. It's a good idea to unhook the grapple in a position with the cylinders either fully open or fully closed. The grapple style will really determine which of those positions is best.

Also, depressurize your hydraulic system before unhooking and before rehooking.

It may have been fluid expansion because I am pretty sure that I de-pressurized before disconnecting the grapple. The pressure was definitely on the grapple side of the fittings. We did have some cool weather and now it is warmer again.

Being a chemist, I am very familiar with fluid properties, but did not think that the pressure build up would be that much. However, this is a closed system full of an incompressible liquid - duh. :shocked:

If it's a 60" Wicked Root Rake Grapple, I'd store it fully open and face down. Cylinders will be retracted and lid will be bottomed out.

If it's a long bottom 60" Wicked...fully closed.

Those are the positions which will prevent gravity from building pressure. If you're a chemist, I"m sure you've forgotten more than I ever thought about learning concerning expansion due to temperature. :laughing:

I have the same issue reconnecting my backhoe. I take a PVC cap, put it over the fitting on the BH and strike it with a hammer. The hammer will pop open the valve on the fitting and release the pressure. The PVC will prevent any damage to the firing. The cap will prevent you from getting sprayed with fluid when the pressure is released. Although your hand will bet a bit wet with hydraulic fluid.

Achievement Unlocked! Wicked 60" Root Rake Grapple earns "Old Man" seal of approval!



Got my 3rd function valve from MIE installed today. Hooked my new Wicked grapple onto the tractor, and headed behind the house to clean up some dead trees we had cut down. Judging from the 6 minutes I spent on the machine before being kicked off by my 75 year old father, I think I'm going to like it. Dad definitely likes it! That thing closes with authority. The dead pine tops he was piling up were snapping like toothpicks when he clamped the grapple down on them, and he was smiling the whole time! Its his new favorite attachment! I'll have to sneak out with it sometime when he's not around to get a little playtime with it myself! He was raised on a farm, spent untold time with tractors and implements, so when he brags about any "new" piece of equipment, you must be doing something right!
