Turns out that for my footing (only 12" below grade) I must use rigid conduit rather than PVC. That stuff is pretty expensive and it seems to me it's just going to rust out eventually, but there it is.

Anyway, I'm told I need to run three #3 TNNH wires and a #8 TNNH for ground to have 100AMP service and 220.

you probably only have to use rigid where it comes through the floor. Ask more questions to be certain as to what the local regulations are . In this part of CT, I would have needed to use rigid (steel) sweeps and risers on the poles if there was a possibility that it could be struck by a car. Since my pole is in a lawn area, this requirement was waived. Possibly Inspector 507 can give us some guidance as to what code requires. He is our resident expert when it comes to electrical code requirements. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( Here in north Texas, in every house I've seen, electric service comes out of the ground outside the building, up through conduit to a breaker box. This breaker box is then connected through the wall to the service panel inside the building (or garage) where the individual circuit breakers are installed.)</font>

That's all about meter reading. The meter needs to be where the reader can see it. So they always put the meter base on an outside wall with conduit to the breaker panel inside.

Cliff,
PVC going to your service needs to be 18" below grade but Rigid Metallic Conduit only needs to be 6" below grade.
If they are asking for RMC, then ask if you can use Schedule 80 PVC. It is approved for areas that may be subject to physical damage.
If you decide to use the rigid only where it comes through the floor, extend it all the way up to the new box so it can be bonded/grounded. If you only have the rigid in the middle of the PVC run, that could be a problem.
