Actually rswyan, my thinking has not evolved that much. I am still looking at the number of deaths and how insignificant those are relative to historical numbers.

It is going to be near impossible to know the infection rate...at least in time for it to matter; or the mortality rate until it is nearly over. Even the models used a few weeks ago are being revised and updated as this unfolds. No one really know...no one.

IMO Fauci is focused on saving lives he is not focused on the consequences of our country being destroyed economically. But it cannot be only about saving lives from this virus. Fauci does not want his memorial to be "He was instrumental in allowing 250k more lives to be lost to save the economy" A leader needs to be able to make that call but that leader needs someone like Fauci to tell him what that number is ...if it "only" 250k? Then it is a hard but simple decision...back to work America...we are accepting an increase of less than 10% in deaths.

We are 8500 deaths....the only number than matters...the stock market has fallen almost 30% and we are wasting 2.2 trillion on a stimulus package (with more to come if we listen to the congress critters). The price of life may be too high. We lost 100,000 in the N3H2 of 1968 and no one wrung their hands in despair.

Again...just trying to put things in perspective.

BTW, my son's fiancé works in a hospital in NYC and has come down with this thing. My family has not been unaffected, but I will not let that cloud the reality of the damage this is causing to my country.

I will continue to monitor deaths as the most reasonable measure of how bad things are and our status. I am fairly certain the number of deaths are being exaggerated to increase funding, resources, and fuel the panic (except those in China which are likely much higher).

I worry it's just the opposite. There is already some compelling data coming out that deaths are underestimated because so many are dying without being able to be tested, or dying outside hospitals.

I would think apartment buildings, and condos with shared entries, stairwells, and elevators would be a high risk place to be. No way to keep the separation required by social distancing. As well as the potential common areas touched, even inadvertantly.

Then the public transportation.

If you look at the situation in NYC, that would answer your question.

I took a look at the health departments in the 3 counties around me and see some odd numbers. Here I calculate that 90 percent of those tested for covid-19 are negative. Sounds good at first glance, but it makes me wonder what's so wrong with that 90 percent that they thought they had this bug ? Regular flu ? What ?

Looking at counties down around NYC, the positive test rate is about 45-50 percent.

After all, the virus STARTED in Wuhan, China. Wuhan's population is 11 million alone! China's population is 1.4 billion!!!

Spain's population is 46.7 million and yet the death rate (so far!) in Spain is three times that of China!

The virus has had more time to spread at the source (China) before migrating to Europe. Any ideas why this is?

Perhaps ???, this is an engineered virus, attacking only certain compatible DNA receptors, that are only found in non-Asian peoples? :confused3:

We have another health care crisis in the making.. hospitals that are empty, health care workers being sent home because there are no patients. We have areas that are slammed for sure, but the empty hospitals and clinics far out number them.. We need to open up the country for business sooner than Dr Fauci thinks.. it is going to take years to recover economically from this crisis... unless we are saved with the vaccine being developed.. I heard another existing drug is showing much promise, 1 dose, cured within 48hrs.

I don't think you can trust the numbers out of China... the death rate for any country is highly dependent on how many are tested.. some countries are testing more than others.. so you don't have a consistent denominator. If all countries were testing xxxx/100000 for example, then you might be able to compare death rates.. I read that over 50% of the cases don't show any symptoms. As Dr Brix has said, after this is over, they may be able to go back and do some work to determine more answers, but this is not the time.

Yes, since you asked for ideas...

First, given China's history, there's a good chance the numbers are a lot lower than actual.
Second, did the police show up at the publics' doorstep demanding they quarantine in the U.S. as soon as it was apparent this was a highly contagious virus? Nope. We're just getting to that point 4 months later here.

Just a couple ideas. Nothing fact based.

Here's another thought! ( I apologize so many questions). First, I understand we all were caught off guard. I also understand very few and I mean VERY few people really understand hygenics. Some health care workers I've heard are knowledgeable, know proper mask, goggles, gloves, wash constantly, wash clothes (scrubs) at home, was shoes...list goes on.
However! Today's a good example for me...
Wife and I get feed, supplies from farm store. Everyone has on a mask/gloves. We still had to touch lots of things! In truck I have alcohol cleaner (whiskey under the seat) but still have to touch keys, handles, etc. They we get restaurant take out (how clean is that?).
My point is you could be 99% perfect...but that 1% mistake is all it takes!
Other forums I read "I'm doing everything right, and staying home". To that I say phooey, we still have to eat.
Remember aids years ago, some people who were positive deliberately tried to spread it!

Also forgot to add to Stepp...a good friend lives in Palos Verdes (LA)...his wife is Chinese. I was talking to them recently about the biological warfare lab in Wuhan, how I thought "something got out"...his wife said she thought the same thing!

A coworker put his house up for sale a week ago. Got several offers within 24 hours. Sold in 48. Location, location, location.

We sold ours just before it started and don't settle until December, just sitting back and waiting now to see what happens but inspections are restricted and auctions are online only.
I wonder if prices will drop, agents say no, of course.
