Looking to go on vacation end of July/Aug. We were just going to drive the 8 hrs. to Ocean
City, Maryland. Looking for beachfront rooms on the boardwalk, rates are out of site, especially
for what they have to offer. Wife started searching & found that Cancun has some really nice places
that have all inclusive rates. I guess that includes food & drinks etc. if you stay within that
hotels confines. Don't ask me how she ended up in Cancun, but now that she has it looks
like a pretty good deal. Has anyone been to Cancun? Anything you can offer to make
this a nice trip. Our 2 daughters 11 & 12 are going too.

Just a few hints,
Keep your daughters in sight at all times

Do Not consume any drink with Ice Cubes
Do immediately stop when ordered to do so by a cop
Do NOT drive any vehicle worth more than $100-
Do BUY trip insurance
Do NOT need medical attention
Wear lots of sun screne
Use only travelers checks
Do NOT wear jewelry
Enjoy Mexico

Ron,

I've never been, but my best friend and his wife had a great time in Cozumel (sp?). His advice to me was if I went to only eat and drink at the all inclusive resort where they took extra care to help their guests avoid the revenge. Even then, on a resort run scuba trip, my friend thinks a piece of melon he ate might have been responsible for some digestive upset. On the other hand, his sweetie works in health inspection, and they are both rather more concerned about such matters than I have ever been. They won't eat in half the local restaurants I frequent. If you were to decide to stay in the States, have you looked at renting a beach house on the North Carolina coast? We've stayed on Holden's Beach a couple of times. Nice places right on a good beach. We also went to the outer banks one year, but the beaches there tend to be a bit rougher. I had to "save" my wife and mother from being "swept out to sea" at one point. I walked out, grabbed their floats, and walked back with them. Hero for the day.

Watch the weather reports - June to November is hurricane season ya know -- with 15 July - 15 Oct being the time I'd be most concerned with. Check the web - more info than the TV.

Boy that's true. We've been to the North Carolina beaches three times during hurricane seaason and only got rained on for a day or so. The wife wants to do it again. I sure hope we don't get that fourth time charm thing. It'd be no fun at all trying to evacuate from the barrier islands with everyone else trying to do the same. The same applies to many of the Mexican resorts, of course. Trip insurance might be a good idea. Has anybody had any experience with that? Did it pay off?

for my money this time of year i would go to burmuda. end of june begining for july are some of the dryest times there. it is more expensive than cancun but it is safe! your girls can hang out in town while you guys shop...everyone does speak english the beaches are beutiful and its hard to get lost. there are some all inclusive deals going on right now too! my flight from bwi was only 225 last summer. i have no clue as to hotel prices as i stayed with my girlfriend's (at the time) family . hope this helps.

Cancun is great - some of the prettiest beaches and water in the world, but I prefer Cozumel. Went on a 4-wheeler excursion through the jungle on the "wild" side of the island. Memorable to say the least. Nearly all of the hotels and major restaurants in the resort cities purify their water and there is not much to worry about. We prefer the all-inclusive thing because it is a better deal and the food has been great, but we always will take a few meals at local establishments. But if you can get past the widespread poverty, Jamaica has been so far, our favorite Caribbean destination. We stayed in Negril, again at an all-inclusive. Hard to stay away from the gonja dealers though.

Cancun is nice if you stay on the island. The big hotels are said to have their own water purification systems but when we went we skipped the water and ice anyway. The reefs off Cancun and Cozumel are excellent for scuba diving and snorkeling. You ought to check the weather records for temps down there in July and August. We got overheated one day there in December when it was in the upper 90s in temp. and humidity.

Thank you all for your input. Now it's time to sit down, do a little more research & decide the plan of attack. I think any of the locations you all suggested would be good. Anyone else with a suggestion/comment feel free to add. I'll post later with our decision.

Went to Cancun during "spring break" 2 years ago and had a great time. We avoided the resort/convention area because it was a little too crazy for mid-40's types but enjoyed watching all the college aged booty. Ate at local cantinas and never had a problem. We only drank bottled water but mosly drank Tequila...LOTS of it. Weather in mid-March was high 80's low 90's. I would guess July/August would be too hot for me. I don't tolerate our Michigan summers all that well.

Bottom line...great vacation at a great price.

We have been to cancun 5 times and on the bigger hotels it's fine to drink the water and eat ice cubes becuase they all have water purified there i have never seen any gangs in the "zona hoteal", ride buses DONT DRIVE!!!

Have fun

We stayed at the Omni and loved it

Have been to the Cancun area twice in the last 8 months. Both times we went to Playa del Carmen area, about 60 miles south of Cancun. Very very nice. We stayed at the Gala resort. Beautiful beach, all inclusive, jungle tours, underground river snorkeling. Just about anything you'd want to do. Your doctor can give you stuff for Montezuma's revenge. Use a little discretion where you eat outside of the hotel and you won't have a problem.

been to cancun twice, would love to go again, loved it both times, went to Chichenitza both times, that place just fascinated me. took the lobster cruise, great evening entertainment, well worth the money.
also stayed at the Omni. went to town several times, darn, i missed the gangs though. they don't tolerate crime there as tourists are their bread and butter, and they treated us like they appreciated us being there.
this year we're stayin home, on vacation for the next two weeks, gotta catch some seat time.
Last year the bx 2200 was delivered on thursday, i got home friday night about 10:30 and left for vacation early saturday morning, sure was hard to pull myself away with the orange baby sitting there so shiny.
You'll love cancun.

Now I am really confused. Crown Paradise, Moon Palace, Beach Palace, Cancun Palace,
Omni etc. etc. I've been all over the place--cancun chat boards, cancun visitors home
pages, travel companies. It's enough to drive you nuts. That's probably why my vacations
are few & far between. Decision needs to be made soon....

Ron,
Be sure to let us know how you make out.
Don't forget those all important Spanish expressions-

Una otra cerveza, por favor.
and
¿Dónde está el baño?

¡Buena suerte!

Well we just returned from our trip to Cancun. We stayed at an all inclusive resort called Moon Palace. It was a secluded resort that was spread out over 1 1/2 miles. There were many buildings that were three stories high. The food was outstanding. We ate & drank way too much, although they only carried two beers, Tecate & Dos Equis, that weren't that great. I was hoping they had Corona but I was told that we wouldn't find Corona at any of the Palace Resorts. The weather was beatiful. We went on a few tours, Chichen itza & snorkeling on Isla Mujeras. For those of you that has been to Chichen itza & climbed up the 92 steps to the top of the pyramid & then back down, you know what an experience that is! Our girls 12 & 13, had a great time too. Got their hair braided, temporary tattoos, (they better be) went parasailing & rode with Dad on the waverunner. We had a really good time, but it is nice to be home.
