I have a CT 225 (25 hp). I love it but it does seem a little short on hp at times. Has anyone ever increased their hp? if so, what did you do and how much did it cost? The CT225, 230, and 235 all seem to be on the same frame and the only difference seems to be in the engine hp. Is it a different engine or are there any easy changes that can be done to the base engine to increase hp?

The engines have a different displacement. I haven't looked into them that close to tell if it's the same block just bored different and/or maybe a crank change to give a bigger stroke but if you did all this, you might as well just get another tractor. Unfortunately no easy hp gain.

How about propane injection?

Put a 235 injector pump in it and ad some timing...
You may not want to be sitting on the tractor when it comes into a load.
Ever see one of those kids running around your block with a dodge ram Cummings.
You will be what they say "Rolling Coal"
Can't say you'll keep the longevity of you engine but you will have all the power you need to break something.
Ya and one last thing...As the Soprano's use to say you can "Forgetabouted" when it comes to any warranty!
Bring it by I would love to build it for you!

Thanks for the replies.
Wallace - I think I will just have to live with working slower.

Norm, What part of the tractor is slow (and remember that tractors are naturally slow) If it's the hydraulics, you can check the pressure the system has... but if you are looking for a dragster... it ain't gonna happen. :)

I don't want to sound negative here, but did you understand what a 25 HP tractor could do, in terms of pulling power, lifting power, etc. Usually money will limit what one can purchase, and you have to settle for whatever. Bolt on items to increase HP will be costly and probably void the warranty if still under warranty. You could increase the torque with smaller tires. You could increase the lift and curl cylinder size, and lift heavier loads, and increase break out force. but will the front end accept the change.

Some people start oversize, and never use the tractors full potential, and other start out small and eventually upgrade to larger tractors. Finances usually dictate the outcome.

I started out with a 22 HP diesel Kubota, and it does what it does. I also have a 45 gas HP Power-Trac, and it will handle a lot of jobs very well. The largest machine I have is a Case skid-steer and it is 60 HP and will do some heavy duty work, at least what I need it to do. Do I want bigger, actually no, because I am satisfied with what. I have.

Teg,
I am satisfied with the hydraulics. Its just that I have to use Low more than I like.

J J,
This is my first tractor and that is probably part of the problem. I may need more seat time to increase my ability with the tractor. I really like the tractor and am amazed at what it can do. I only have 5.5 acres so I probably don't need more tractor.

Thanks for the input.

I also have a CT225 and as I get more seat time I get better at using the hydrostat to my advatage. It's hard to get used to letting off as the tractor slows down. When I first got my tractor I didn't think high range was good for anything but roads...now I can even climb my steep driveway in high at 1500rpm's. When working hard in dirt I just got good at shifting into low to get the bucket to cut and breakout compacted soil and then quick shift to medium range to transport. It takes some practice but using the clutch and well lubed shift linkage it is almost seamless. Just stab the clutch, tap the brakes at the same time you have gentle pressure on the range shifter and it will make the switch before the tractor even completely stops. Keep practicing to avoid any grinding of gears. It is very similar to shifting a manual trans without a clutch...if you have ever done that.

Sprocket,
I have "ground a pound or two" back in the day.
Part of my problem is as you said - right now high range is not good for much else other than transport. I guess I need more seat time.

I don't know how many hours you have on your machine, but mine got stronger up to about 125 hours. I would say power is better now by 10% or more.

I am getting ready for my 50 hr service. I learn every time I get seat time. I am learning to use rpms, power range, and 4wd to get the job done. I got about 4 hrs in the seat today.

Messmaker, sounds like you had an engine cylinder ring seating problem.

I do not think so.......

It sounds like all of these small deisels gane power in the first 100-150 hours, I know mine has as well

Sprocket, interesting point about shifting on the fly...will have to give that a try...

Interesting re propane injection...never heard of that...but don't think I'll give it a try:D
