I was searching Craigslist the other day looking for attachments I don't really need but would be nice to have at the right price and I found something I couldn't let go. I figured you would all enjoy this find so I'm sharing my excitement with you.

It's great to be able to help someone out in a few minutes on a problem they had been fretting over all day...

I think a lemon cake with my name is coming soon ;-)

And you deserve that cake too. Tip my lid to you :)

Paul, you are doing good. Thanks for posting the story and the photos. Makes me wonder what next for you?!

Well I'm trying to do good but the truth be told sometimes it has backfired on me. There's a saying that no good turn goes unpunished and I've had a few hit me square in the face but that's another story for another time.

This guy with the BX have been doing business with us for as long as I can remember. We've never seen him with a long face or a bad mood and just one of those "good guys"

Last year with his heart condition then the operation he was laid up for six months. He's an active guy and being laid up after the operation was really bothering him. He was starting to get depressed so one Saturday I called him to see how he was doing and he sounded really down so I got the rag top out and went over and talked him into going out for a ride.

Well when I got him in the car and put the top down he just lit up.
We drove around for hours. We stopped by a few local handouts and talked to a few locals, had a coffee or two then took him home to his wife. By the time I got to my home his wife was on the phone talking to my wife saying how happy he was and what a great day he had.

We did that for the next five months. Every week I'd stop by and pick him up for an afternoon. He started talking more positive every week, started talking about the new BX and was really looking forward getting things done so yesterday was the start of the getting things done.

What's an afternoon worth to me? Not much, just a few hours. What's an afternoon worth to a healing 73 year old man that gets to try his brand new year old tractor? Priceless.

Paul, your help to the elderly gentleman reminded me of the saying, "Live a good, honorable life... Then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time." You have enjoyment in store for you.

You are good guy, Paul Shorts. I can't help but think that if and when you need a break, your store of good karma will be chock full and ready to give you some positive payback. If we all just did something nice that wasn't really required every now and then, what a better place the world would be! Can't let the dumb asses win.

Thanks guys. How often do we hear that an elderly person froze to death because they lost the power to their home or died of heat stroke because of a power outage and lost the AC. Every time I hear that sort of thing I have to ask myself " Didn't someone know that these people might be in danger? Why didn't someone check on them?"

Its terrible when acts of kindness become a rarity these days when in reality it should be the norm. We all should have an adopt a senior. If there's someone elderly in your area keep an eye out for them this winter because most of these people could always use a little help. Showing them you are concerned about them will surely make them feel better and their lives a little more enjoyable.

I do think we should deal with older people better than we do. My wife's parents were in their 90's and would never have complained but were living alone and unable to care for themselves. He had polio as a child, couldn't walk and had to pull himself upstairs to the bedroom with the handrail. They lived in this same house since he built it 65 years earlier. Ants in the cookies and that kind of thing. Their son lived nearby but didn't help.

Anyway, when I saw that, they moved in with us. He went from 127 lbs to almost 160 lbs in short order and had a wonderful last two years. He got out (in a wheelchair) to more places in that time than in the prior 10 years. She is still sharp tack and can shop, cook or garden all day with the best of them.

Old people need a helping hand because they can't always help themselves. They might have been able to conquer things when they were younger but maybe not now because of physical limitations. Now, I'm not some bleeding heart woosie but only someone willing to give a helping hand to someone else that could use one. It's no big deal but a little effort goes a really long way.

I agree. Grandma, has eye issues, so she cant drive anymore and she "doesn't want to be a bother" but if we insist that we are taking her to church, or to visit the cemetery where Grandpa is buried when we are there for a visit and if we insist that "its not a bother" she greatly appreciates it.
