Whatever. Not to be a SA but I'm done here. Your game, not mine.
So you angry I am considering building a Barndominium or something? Honestly don't understand your take. btw, it was the building inspector who suggested to me a couple years back I build a barndo, he built one for his son.

Anyways, doesn't hurt to ask a few insurance agents in the planning stages what they think.

If I was still 50 I'd be riding my chopper all over America while I still can (could :)).
When I was in my 30's I quit my job twice to go windsurfing in Mexico and California for the winter. Finally gave in and moved to CA for 17 years. You're a bachelor so take advantage of your freedom of choice. These days many are working remotely? You're running out of time which you will begin to notice at 60.

It's either that or get a big dog and a little log cabin so you can live on your property.
All comes to he who waits (as long as he is waiting in the right place, LoL).

I work remotely one day a week. I actually prefer working in the office tbh. Working from home is just not very appealing. I think it's because I like to separate my work from home. As soon as I leave the office, I leave work behind until the next morning.

So almost all the builders I have talked to about the Barndominium recommend bookshelf framing.

Has anyone ever used this method of bookshelf framing? Bookshelf

It's looking like I'd be using 3PLY 2X8 "glulam"/"perma-straight" columns. Which I believe are 4-1/8" X 6-3/4" actual finished dimensions. So if I use 2X8 lumber for the bookshelf wall girts there would be a 1/2" deviation between the bookshelf framing and the outside of the columns. Is 1/2" enough to run electrical?

Not sure I like this idea if a screw for the steel siding vertical seam ends up on a column, won't the siding get sucked in?

I do like the idea that the steel siding is not touching the columns, reducing thremal bridging.

Maybe small strips of 1-1/2" wide x 1/2" plywood on the columns at the screw intervals for the siding is a solution for the siding not sucking in?

You're talking about the thermal bridging at the columns, but won't it have thermal bridging at east shelf now?

I've seen it used, an extreme waste of lumber in my estimation. Using 2x8 for the horizontal nailers, Going that way I'd look at the cost of the tin wall studs run horizontal even using an inner and outer course may be less expensive.

Yes. It seems like there would be more thermal bridging than with just the standard post & beam construction. But so far all the builders keep saying bookshelf is best for the living spce as it provides drywall nailiners.

I'm almost thinking to go with standard outer wall girts, then just use 2X4 stud walls between the colums in the living space flush with the inside of the posts, that way I have normal stud walls for drywall, and have a cavity of ~3-3/4" between the stud walls and the outside girts for insulation. The only thermal bridging in that scenario is at the columns where the outer girts connect.
