Does anyone know if an International model 46 baler will fit on a 16' flat-bed, car-hauler type tandem axle trailer? I'm concerned with the width. I'll be picking it up tomorrow. The owner is 7 hrs away and says it's 8' wide, but I find it hard to believe and can't call him until 7pm tonight. Anybody know?

Have him measure outside tread width

As long as the tires fit on the trailer, assuming you don't have sides on the trailer, it can hang over a little.

If you have side rails, now that could be a problem.

Boy, that was quick!

Anyway, I dunno if the tires will fit. No sides on this trailer, just the fender wells sticking outside the deck. I'm concerned whether the tires will clear the fenders, basically.

I may just have to wait until I can call the owner.

Not familiar with the baler, but I would not be surprised if it was 8' wide to the outside of the wheels. That would only leave 6' or less for the baler machinery.
I live on a farm to market road and it is not unusual to see a baler being towed down the road and taking up more that it's lane.

It's been 30 yrs since I've been near a baler, but they used to have a field/road tongue position. We used to not shift it if we were going short distance, cuz that was WORK! If we were towing one behind a pickup and/or any distance, we've shift them.

The other option is to put it on the trailer, then angle it if you have to, so the pickup attachment misses the fender.

Though not as easy, I suppose you could drop the pickup attachment and load them separately if you had to.

Enjoy--and let us know what you find please.

nope, not unless ya have fenders strong enough to drive it up and over, the tires are on the very outer edges of a baler, and most all balers are atleast 8ft wide, my NH is 8 ft 6 inch, a friend has a newer NH that is over 9 ft wide. you better bring lotsa ramps and blocking since its gona be a trick fitting it on that trailer

Not familiar with that baler but if it's 8' wide then that will more than likely be at the tires. Is this a round or square baler? I don't think there's anyway you'd get a square baler on.

I have that same baler and we haul it on a flt trailer that is 102 inches wide with no sides. I think the baler is exactly 8 feet and there is only 3 inches to play with on each side. Hope that helps. Those are real good old balers! What did you have to give for it?

IF the baler is really 96" wide you have a problem. A car hauler is typically no more than 83-84" between the fenders. You could remove the fenders and gain some room but not the foot you'll need. Without the fenders you could conceivably driver over your trailer tires if your baler would clear them afterwards.

Another option is to build up your bed to the point of having the floor at the height of the tops of your fenders. Neither are perfect methods but each will work.

Good luck with whatever you decide. I hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I dont think a BIG holiday weekend is when I would want to be hauling a bulky item like that around. With all the extra patrol on the road and even slightly oversize load is going to get stopped. Next week would have been better when no one had money for overtime.

also keep in mind that depending on the state your going through 8'6 may be to wide. PA has a 8ft limit.

big bulky item, its less than 8ft6in, i wouldnt be at all worried about it, its perfectly legal, most car trailers are 8ft6in to the outside of the fenders. when i start to get worried is hauling stuff like my 10ft wide rake home on the back of my truck on the interstate highway, even then all i did was put red flags on the outer edges and go for it, passed a few cops but no one had a problem with it. what he is doing is still legal so i wouldnt worry a bit about it, and besides they are usualy alot more leanient on farm machinery, heck people drive combines with 16ft heads all over on the roads, i go everywhere with a haybine thats 12ft wide and never had a problem.

Mark, trailers in Minnesota are 8' max. Farm exemption, a farm implement can be 10' with no problem. Fruther, a farm implement going under 30 mph and properly marked can be wider, just not cross the centerline.

So, you can tow a wide baler or haybine without worries in Minnesota. However, if you put it on a trailer, you hit the 8' width rule!!!! Different states have different rules. You can move farm equip up to 20' here if you have a lead pickup with flashers on.

As you say, probably get away with it. On the other hand, you get involved in an accident, and then what? Your insurance doesn't cover because you weren't legal, sue because they got hurt - and you are in a world of hurt too. I sure would not pick a holiday weekend with a lot of big campers on the road in inexperienced hands - ouch!

If it were me, i'd arange a heavy loader at the other end, place the baler on the trailer at an angle, & take the chute/ hitch/ etc. off until it fit. It will fit at an angle, but very difficult to 'roll' it to that postion. Once you got it home, you have time to figure out how you want to get it off.... I'd go there Saturday & get loaded, come back Sunday (not a holiday weekend) and leave early, best travel time with such stuff.

I know this is an older message, wonder how it turned out?

OK, guys, here's how it went. Since it was going to be a 7-hr drive, I had to use a trailer. I didn't NEED the baler anyway, but it was at REAL good price. I called the guy and asked him if he had a local buyer. He said someone contacted him from 35 miles away and would buy it if our deal fell through. I told to just sell it locally. I was just not ready for this purchase.

FYI-
Since I am moving a baler in PA - There is an exemption to the 8 ft wide rule. If it is a farm implement it can be up to 10 ft wide but you can go on limited access highways. Just got off the phone with the PA state police.
