PJ trailer modification, any problems?

None of the four PJ trailers I have has had any issues with the powder coat, so maybe this is more of an eastern thing?

There are also single axle trailers with 5200 lb axles, probably just under your needs, around 3500 lb capacity.

I too have a hoe about the same weight as yours, IHI 15NX and would never even think of hauling it on a single axle trailer. Lose a tire and maybe lose the hoe. If need be hire a welder to build a heavy frame yet smaller trailer. I have a 16 foot, 10.000 lb trailer and the only part i hate is the width. The thing could be 2 or 3 ft narrower
