The guy came to grade my logs today. He arrived about 1:00 and left at 6:00 and we only got about half of the logs done. Never in my wildest imagination did I think he was going to be so detailed. I had heard stories of inspectors looking at logs for 5 minutes and then stamping them. This kid made me move every single log out to where he could inspect every square inch of it. He scratched about 6 of them for having too much twist to the grain ( 1 inch in 6 where the minimum is 1 in 8 ). A few he found a spot the size of a half dollar that was soft and said "too much decay". I said the diameter is 28 inches and you're scratching it for an 1/8 of an inch of decay about 2 inches across??? He stamped 30 out of about 40 and said he had to leave. Cost me $658 for the privilege of getting totally discouraged. I hate the government more everyday.

Mr Fuller Take the "scratched" logs back in the unchecked pile maybe another inspector will be next to finish. They will be all new to him.
Did you tell him they were all fresh when you got the load.

A few years ago sold several acres of timber. and on one load rode with the driver to the mill.
The person that graded the load culled several logs and they were lifted off and put on a trailer sitting beside the scales. Then the load was weighed and a check was written.
Asked what happens to the culled logs he said when loaded he runs them across scales and gets the check .
Drivers that complain seem to be just over looked when waiting to be called to unload.
And who cares what the owner gets.
Stay with the project some day will be able to set the first logs.

You are taking this rather well. By now my Irish temper would have sent me into DefCon5 and I think I would have tried to shove one of those logs ........nevermind.

$658? For what...his time...a permit? Bo, I think I would read that building code front to back, then go in to the building dept every day raising heck until you get your permit. At this point it does not seem like you have anything to loose.

It's not too late....plenty of land here, abundant water, low taxes, innocuous building permits...etc...etc

Defcon 5? I would have already pushed the launch button. I honestly believe i would be in jail.

I have never, ever heard of anyone being jerked around more than this trying to get a permit. You have the patience of Job.

Holly Molly! I feel so lucky. Our building department really work with you to get your house built and land developed. They give you a heads up about any regulations or conditions that may adversely effect you and any regulation changes coming down the pipeline that may effect you. They want to make sure your putting together something you will be able to sell if you desire. Of course if you start building first before getting educated, it might not be near so good an experience, not saying this is what happened in your case. Yikes i really feel for you and winter fast approaching!

After spending the weekend last week feeling bad about my less than stellar log inspection, I decided to stay up here all week, and sent my wife home in my truck so she could work her scheduled shifts. I hauled a load of chat (gravel) each day and plan on tomorrow morning also (5 loads). That will cover what got washed away by the storms this past summer and about 150 feet of new coverage.
Yesterday my dog (Rottweiler) got attacked by something and is pretty torn up ( see Javelina Attack in Rural Living). Friday evening will be the soonest I can get to the vet. Prayers for her requested.

Bo - sorry to hear about your pup, they're always pups regardless of their age. Take care of yourself too, whatever got her could do the same to you. I hope your carrying something that can stop a javelina.

I always have my Glock 30 with me. And I always have a backup mag, so I have 20 rounds of .45 at all times. If I ever hear or see coyote or javelina I am off and running toward them to get a shot.

Thanks. She seems to be doing better. My wife comes up tomorrow to get me. We were going to stay until Sunday, but now we will turn around as soon as she gets here and head back to Phoenix. Once we get her (the Rotty) to my nephew the vet, I will feel much better.

I left the dog at home with my wife to recover this weekend. Today I hauled 20 ton of chat (gravel). It's a 114 mile round trip and I made 3 trips. My butt is tired!

I'm still waiting on my permit, but meanwhile there's a zillion things to do.
Last week we went up for a 5 day weekend and got a lot done. I welded for the first time in my 62 years! My dump truck has two doors that swing out instead of a gate that lifts, making it all but impossible to spread gravel. My neighbor helped me fabricate a spreader, using two pieces of 1 1/2 inch by 1/4 inch square tubing. We welded two brackets on each side and cut two bars to lay in those brackets. Then we screwed plywood to the cross pieces and left an opening at the bottom of about 4 inches. We hauled several loads of road base and it worked great! I wish he would have suggested it a year ago!!
My neighbor did some of the welding to show me, then let me try my hand. I eventually got use to it, after sticking my rod to the truck several times. A few days later he was welding on his tractor and called me up and said to come over and make a center brace for my spreader, as it would bow out when under a load. He didn't help me much (his plan) and it turned out pretty good.
I can't believe I didn't take any pictures of it. I won't be back up or a couple weeks, so you'll have to wait. :)

Mr. Fuller Are you going to have the permit dated 2013 because the working weather is about over.
Been trying to weld like all the pictures look since the little cracker box machine was shown how to build in popular mechanics mag. still looks like some one needing to learn. but it holds what ever needed welding.
Best purchase I've made was a good grinder to hide the welding tracks.

Dog healed by this time?

Ken,

Our dog is almost completely healed, and doing great. Thanks.

I will still try to get the permit asap, as I hear the county is planning on adopting a more updated code, which will no doubt make it even harder. Even if I don't do anything for 5 months, I'd rather get the stupid permit as soon as I can.

And yes, I spent a LOT of time grinding on my welding project. LOL
When I do take pictures, I don't think I will take any close-ups, as it would just be something to laugh about!

The County contacted me yesterday and said they made their decision on the road name. We submitted about a dozen choices, 8 of which they struck off, saying they were too close to another name. So with all 6 ballots counted, the new name is;

Wild Hogs Road

4 of the six owners ride motorcycles, so I guess that's why it won.

Mr. Fuller maybe now the building permit can be submitted they will be able to locate your house.
Sure lost a good fall and so far light winter in putting up material.
Did they complete the testing of the logs.

Weather here has been excellant 35 at night and 55 day time Just need rain were about 12 inches short this year.
Guess you didn't win the lottery Some one from Fountain did. Population about 500 ?
as usual never bought a ticket figure about the same chances of winning.
