I've never had an issue.
Do this, then click "view subscriptions" and click the "unsubscribe" link on each thread listed on that page. There may be quite a few if you post often.
After all of that is done, you will never be auto-subscribed again. You can still subscribe manually when you post a reply in "advanced edit" mode (when you click 'reply', not 'quick reply')

Me, I like getting instant email updates, so I set my default to "instant notification", then unsubscribe when I'm finished with the thread.
Subscriptions are especially handy when you use the Android app for this forum, which is wonderful if you've never tried it before.
