Wow, I just discovered this thread. What a great idea! Thank you Muhammad for undertaking such an ambitious project.

Will it be possible to go back and add tags to our old relevant posts?

Yes. We will enable that and also provide some instructions on how to accurately tag threads to a specific model.

The db has more than just tractors in it. But we can definitely remove the totally unrelated items. One good place to start is by looking at what we have threads and reviews for. Perhaps also cutting entire categories, like wheel loaders that aren't part of our typical discussions.

We need the mini wheel loaders. They have Yanmar engines and use the same front end loader buckets. These mini wheel loaders are the size of our compact tractors, not the huge size like Forestry. Some farmers use them to scoop up grains too. Yanmar V1, V2, V3, V4 and V5 match the SCUT to CUT sized tractors.

Other brands have skidsteers in the database too. Some farmers use the skidsteers and Toolcats as their farm tractor.

Could we also tag a thread to multiple models? For example, a BH can fit several models. Likewise a loader. It's all based on the common frame size the OE uses as a platform.

The way that system works is with tags. If the thread is tagged with the specific make and model, it will appear in the database page. If not, it won't show. We retroactively tagged tens of thousands of threads but there are 500k threads on the forum. Not all of the 500k are model specific but it's certainly possible that there are still tens of thousands that could be tagged with a specific model.

Tags circled in cyan. Manage tags for a thread circled in red. Right now only moderators can manage tags but I think we need brand moderators at this point to manage tags.

But hey, at least for tractors we often have bits and pieces of model numbers. Where does something like "Sharpening a drill bit" go? Or "Comparing Tire Types?

I doubt if TBN members are going to voluntarily make their Tractor ID & model description more uniform or specific. And even if they suddenly did so, we still don't want to lose the technical history already existant.

So it looks like the challenge will be to improve on the old-fashioned hand-programmed multiply branched "if/then" program that sorts posts for variations on model numbers, tags them, and dumps them into a repository.

My suspicion is that someday that type of sorting will be trivial for AI, but today getting it operable is still based on human ingenuity. If I think of something useful I'll chime in, but for now will just follow along. watch, and learn.

It's well within the capability of ai right now to read a thread and determine what the topic is about, and within our capability to create the system that does that and tags it correctly. With 500k threads, it's a wonderful application of the technology and so far we've found it to be very accurate.

Where we are at right now is we went through a "first pass" to catch the low-hanging fruits of identifying threads for models by the subject line (thread title) content. The next level will be to read the first post as well and identify if a thread title is "problem with steering" and the thread content identifies the make and model. As others have suggested, there's a bit more to the story when you factor in threads that apply to multiple models, such as with attachments or maintenance topics. To answer the question of where comparing tire types go, that would be, for now, in the forums they are in.

We are more likely going to organize the topics by tag with advancements and improvements to our tag pages. For example, tagging all threads about "grading a driveway" and giving users the ability to sort those tag pages by date posted, number of replies, etc.

Yet, their data does have errors too. I've not found any of the tractor info sites to be spot on for every make and model.
