I am starting to collect parts for this summers upgrades / repairs to the PT. I am thinking about following JJ's advice and buying this handle

Surplus Center Item Detail

And the 50" cable and placing this on the left side of the wheel.

My concern is connecting this cable to the hydraulic control and wondering if anyone has pix of how that short little handle attaches and any other ideas on how to get it to work.

I searched the sight and it looked like a bunch of pictures were missing (bummer).

You can find a link to the picture of the mod I did on my PT422 in my signature. If I had to do it over again, I would make it about 2 inches longer/taller.

Let us know how yours goes!

KMA.. I saw those pix. But I did not see how the whole thing fits into the actual valve actuator.

I am 1000 miles away from my tractor so I am doing this through the kindness of others in terms of pictures and ideas.

But I do dig your system, I thought about it as a great solution but realized it would be nice to 2 hand the backhoe and that could only happen if the QA lever was on the left side...

Unfortunately, I'm at work and don't have access to a good picture. :(

On the 422, there was a small lever that actuated the valve. When my modification extended it out and up, I just matched the stock shape and hole pattern on the valve end of the new longer lever. It's hard to describe, but IIRC there were two holes on the lever where it mated with the valve. One hole was used to fix the lever at a pivot point, and the other had a pin through it connecting it to the valve piston. When you pushed down, the piston moved up and vice versa.

I don't know much about the handle and cable system you are using, but I'd imagine you could mount the cable above the valve, and attach it to a shortened version of the existing lever. When the cable pushes outward, the lever is pushed down, and the valve piston moves up, etc... If you didn't want to cut the stock lever, you could make a new one out of a short piece of 1/2" round stock, grinding the section with the holes flat so it can fit into the valve system. Or find some stock that was a better fit from the start.

Hope that was somewhat helpful, and made a bit of sense. Again, I'm guessing at what you are trying to do and I'm not familiar with the 1850 layout. On the 422, the two handed operation wouldn't be as beneficial since you need to articulate the tractor to dump the mini hoe.

Best of luck!

Having the quick attach handle on the left side of the console would be ideal to me but when I looked at what it would take to relocate I opted to do this instead.

Very nice! Did you make that, or purchase the handle as a direct fit?

Thanks.

Great job!

I am continually impressed by the talent and creativity shown by PT users here at TBN.

All the best,

Peter

I made it. It was raining here today so I went into the shop and removed all the metal that did not look like a handle extension.

Very nicely done. :D Much simpler than what I went through to move my to the left side of the steering wheel -- however I do like being able to manipulate mine with my fingertips and still have my left hand on the wheel, with the right hand on the lift/curl joystick...

I am taking JJ's idea on this one and probably going to order this

Surplus Center Item Detail

And then this

Surplus Center Item Detail

I will drill a hole on the left side.. Drop the cable either through the center console or down the side of the console, cross at the Treddle and come back up on the valves.

But, you guys can see your PT so if you have any ideas on additional items I should order, or maybe I should rethink this, I am happy to take all the input you can give.

When I installed the Aux hydraulic circuit on my 180 I used the same 3 spool valve that is on the 422, 425, and the red Pt's. I think it would be an easy fix ( relocate 3 spool valve ) for you guys that want the Aux circuit in a better location. The downside is that you might have to replace the joy stick with 2 control handles like I did, but all functions can be controlled very easily with your right hand. The picture shows the Aux. circuit handle to the far left side of the valve ( same location as on the 422,425, & red Pt's )

Though you lose the joystick's ease of use, you likely also get rid of the problem of the long, heavy joystick causing the lift to pop out of float position with your solution. Very nicely done, also...

Carl, I've considered this myself, to replace the manual linkage. Should you decide to proceed, please let us know how it goes, and how difficult it is to connect the cable linkage. My PT has Gresen valves, I think, and this cable control setup is for Prince valves, unless I'm mistaken. Not sure how that might complicate matters.

My manual linkage has some slop in it, so it is not as precise as I'd like, but it works better than most of my "shade tree engineering"... :p :D

I should mention that ...at the time I did the conversion on my 180 (2004)...Power-Trac was using Sauer-Danfoss valves on the 180, 422, 425, and the red Pt's.
What manufacture they used, before, or after 2004.... and presently is any body's guess. :D

I put the aux control handle on the left of the wheel like some others. Just 5/16" threaded rod covered with heat shrink tubing after fabrication, use heat to do the 90 degree bend. Some old throttle rod ends to attach to the existing lever - rod pivot bearings are slices from a 4" door hinge with the pin hole drilled and tapped for the 5/16" rod. They are attached with the existing access panel bolts - thread them into the approximate postion before covering the rod with the shrink tubing. I welded an short tab to the existing QT handle - plan on working fast and cooling the piece after welding it (I used a small MIG unit), to preserve the rubber handle (I took the handle off to do the welding). The bellcrank on the end of the threaded rod is another piece of the hinge welded to a nut. Lock it in the appropriate position with another nut - makes things adjustable. I made the length of the vertical piece coming up to the knob long enough that it can be reached with fingers while your hand is on the wheel for steering control. Works very nicely and becomes intuitive.
