Another chipper accident

Watch this all the way through. Don't blink.

What gets me about this video is that is a low speed hydraulic feed. But once the branch gets past the feeder and the rope its dragging gets to the actual chipper, ZOOM! You're gone. :(

Appreciate videos teaching safety because complacency can come easy...

Ropes and vines are a huge danger. Sent a steel wire winch rope through a chipper once , didn't end well but no injuries. Had a guy trying to stuff a log through the feed rollers with his foot, he should have known better but got away with it .

That's the kind of thing I expect of people. The rope is new to me, but good to know. It renders the feed roll useless.

I have a 9" PTO flywheel type chipper (WoodMaxx MX9900). It has a hydraulic motor that runs feed rollers as well as a wrap-around safety bar. My PTO is around 36HP as I remember and this chipper is a scary machine. If something that can kill you doesn't scare you you shouldn't use it. Things like chainsaws, table saws, drill presses, and marriage- things like that.

Wood chippers of all sizes are inherently dangerous and all require some common sense when operating. Problem is, common sense today is getting to be a rare commodity
You have to be mortally afraid of the chipper before you start. Not even 1% room for error.

I'm a hobby chipper around a farm and I've had people trying to, in effect, force me to chip faster by bringing branches to me faster. I made them stop until I caught up. It's too easy to make a mistake.

I can see myself making the same mistake. I would think I am not taking an unnecessary chance without thinking of the ropes.

OSHA used to have a policy of: "It is the policy of the Division to conduct a thorough investigation of the cause of every industrial accident which results in any of the following: (1) a fatal injury to one or more employees; (2) a serious injury or illness; (3) a serious exposure; or (4) the inpatient hospitalization, regardless of duration ."
