An Amish tractor? Say what?

I struggle with their beliefs. I guess I need to devote some time to educating myself by visiting with them. For example, it's not proper to own a car, but it's okay to hire one to haul you wherever.....

Your not the only one. I don't understand any of it. And my feeling are that if you have a belief then you need to stick with it. If you think tractors are bad, then tractors are bad. You don't stick stupid wheels on them and then allow them. You don't use battery tools because electricity is a bad thing. None of it makes sense, and the "slipping down the slippery slope" and changing you "beliefs" because they are more expedient seems hypocritical to me.

Ok, you can have a gasoline engine powered baler, but it has to be pulled by horses and have a stationary engine. NO. If engines are bad ALL engines are bad. And if power tools are bad ALL power tools are bad. If telephones are bad, then ALL telephones are bad. You can't have one outside in the rain.

Jeez...Hold to your beliefs or change your beliefs. Don't do things half axed, and make concessions to reality. Oh sure a nice JD tractor and now you have to wreck the tires.. yeah, that will keep you on the "straight and narrow". Uh huh.

But what do I know. People do stupid things. I have done a few myself.

at 66 years old, I still tend to do something stoopid daily!

My Dad used to bring certain Mennonites Garbage bags full of freshly laundered but rejected work clothing and gloves. FREE. In one of those interactions, he had bought eggs from the woman and was short the exact change. She held out until she got the full amount. That about sums some of them up. Friendly facade, but there's them, and there's everyone else.

Same where I live, ALL the Amish here have tractors on normal rubber.

SR

By Amish, do you mean the black clothed, black bonnet types? Or the Mennonite that might wear the lighter blue pants, drive a car and seem more modern?

That is really interesting. We go up Sugar Creek twice a year for the wife to go shopping and I enjoy looking at the Amish craftsmanship and products. I will have to pay more attention to the tractors from now on. On another note - the Chocolate candy place (Coblentz) in Walnut Creek has some of the best chocolate I have ever had!

Yes, Coblentz is the best there is. For anyone reading this, find out if they have mail order and if they do, order something. I like their dark chocolate mints--like Peppermint Patties--but it's all good. Best I ever had. Order some for the wife and when she gets them just start shopping for a new tractor and implements. It's that good.

Coblentz Chocolate in Walnut Creek, Ohio.

Agree with the others. If air in the tires is not allowed, why not fill them with foam or fluid?

Bishop did not say so. Order, structure, respect and preserving the culture and way of life are all things. Local control.

Local Control? I am curious how much discipline the young men have as to what may or may not appear on their smart phone screens.

I am sure the world and technology is changing faster then the clergy can control it

I agree or seems pretty stupid. Aside from being pointless a lot of time was wasted that could have been better spent doing that.

One of the very few times I have disagreed with James.....
Religion is so very personal, and to each their own,

I am catholic, or at least was born catholic, and I have much more respect for the Amish religion than I do the Catholic religion, although I believe all the precepts of the catholic church, how does one continue to have faith in the actual church after finding out all of the sins of its leaders?

I still believe in Mother Mary, and Jesus Christ, but having a sustainable belief in the Church has been an impossible feat for me

I often consider documenting mine. If I could ever recall all of them it would literally fill a book...maybe even make an interesting short film or OSHA documentary.

I’d have something to smile about in the old folks home for sure....

If I documented mine, I would have more posts than some of the people on TBN

:D

One of the nice things about getting older is forgetting some of the more egregious errors we make in life :)

The craftsmanship philosophy gets out of hand around here. Some people tout the Amish as great builders. As with any community, there are good and bad. I've saw some very bad.

I think I've posted this before, but I visited some of the RV places around Elkhart, IN. including one that sometimes tells people how great their RVs are because they're built by Amish. I watched a guy with a power screwdriver doing some of the assembly, and he was stripping about every third screw. Needless to say, I never have, and never would, buy that brand of RV.
