I am looking for recommendations on a paint pot. I need at least 2 gallons. I had thought that these things would be readily available, but it seems that they are specialty tools with only a few manufacturers. The on-line reviews on a few have been, scary.

It would operate under 60PSI, so it is a standard paint pot.

I plan on doing fence lines in the spring. <- How is that for planning? LOL

I have older spray equipment (Binks) and have had good success with it. Not what I would use to paint a fence though as it would be cumbersome compared to an airless rig. Using an airless with pot eliminates the need for a mobile air compressor and double hoses for paint and air.

Having both mobile air compressors and mobile gensets along with airless and conventional air with paint pots I would use the Binks for fine finish work and a fence or house I would use the airless.

I have a generator and compressor in the bed of an RTV, so I am mobile. All I need is a decent paint pot, looking at Harbor Freight now. But am hoping to hear of good first-hand knowledge with a paint pot. It sounds like a simple tool, but anything under pressure is not simple. LOL.

I've seen a lot of them here on the local Craigslist. Some just the pot, some are the pot, hoses and gun. But for painting a fence, I'd look at one of the smaller airless, just one hose to drag around, much less overspray, good coverage

I think the majority of the airless hold pretty limited amounts of paint? I have a few miles of fence. Which is why I was looking at a paint pot. But for the price point, maybe an airless would suffice? Then it goes back to the amount of paint volume itself.

I have a lot of experience with pressure pots, and own a 2 gallon electrostatic sprayer.

My first question is, why don't you use an airless?

Unless you are spraying two part, catalyzed automotive, or industrial paint, you usually don't need atomizing spray equipment.

Atomized painting outdoors, is very prone to over spray issues.

With an airless, the paint is not broken down into such small particles, so over spray is easier to control.

You can get an airless pump that will suck paint paint right out of 5 gallon, and 55 gallon drums.

You will also use much less paint with an airless.

Awesome info!

The paint pot is the only tool my compressor is lacking. I have a ton of air-tools, so I thought this to be the best route.

I am not all about collecting equipment, so that factored into it. But I can see, clearly, the differentiation between the tools.

Thanks for all the replies, great links and information.

One more point about the airless- the 5 gallon cans have a small screw top in the lid. With this setup and a rag or something you will spill very little if any paint as you bounce around. A nice airless is good for other projects or you can typically rent them from the paint store or rental yard.

I have this brand but a little bigger model-

Check out the airless sprayer at HF. Its made by Krause $ Beck and can be used with 1-5 gallon pails of paint. I just got my new monthly sale paper and its on sale for final mark down price of $169.99 with a super coupon. Item # 62915/60600. Comes with 25' hose. Here's the ad that shows a sale price of $209.99 but but marked down with the super coupon for the $169.99 price.

At a previous job I painted semi trailers now and then.
With an Airless Sprayer I could paint a 45' trailer in 45 minutes!
And 30 minutes of that time was moving the ladder!
Airless is great with latex paint but solvent paints are a pain to clean and use a lot of solvent to clean properly.

Ok , see if you can find a airless parking lot striper . Why ? Its an airless paint sprayer , gas powered on wheels .No generator needed .

Second Idea , If you are interested , I have 2 old air atomizing parking lot stripers , They havent been run in years , but they are paint pots on wheels , 4 or 5 gallons . I use to use hoses off my old torches and an car paint gun and paint equipment with one .

I have a 2.5 gal pot in the shop for my HVLP Binks gun, California Technology brand. These guys sell them: C.A. Technologies Pressure Paint Tanks and Pots

But for the price of one, you can buy a mid-level Graco airless, which is what I use for fences, siding, etc. Sits right over a 5 gal bucket and REALLY puts out the paint. It will paint faster than you can move....I suggest a 50' hose to go with it.

I have been swayed to look at the airless. In fact, I completely forgot about my outbuildings. Guess one doesn't think about bad things. LOL.

In any case, the airless looks to be the right tool for the job, and has the benefit of simplicity in setup and operations. The price point, especially with the super coupon from HF, looks agreeable. Thanks for pointing that out George2615.

If you had a project or two to do, the HF unit would probably be fine.

You're talking about miles of fence, that's a big job. I would even not consider a Chinese tool for that kind of job.

I suggest you buy a Graco.

This isn't a buy it and your good to go forever tool, they do require parts to be replaced after spraying a certain amount of material.

Any Sherwin Williams, or other paint store, has parts for a Graco in stock.
