This is America, so everyone can put in a driveway as wide as they want. If you have a LONG driveway like mine, then you will probably eventually come to the same reasonable conclusion as me, that being 12-15 wide is plenty. 20' is about the width of the main road at the end of my driveway which is 2 directional including a passing zone.

The real question is: Even if you like having a long wide driveway to maintain and spend time and money on: Do you really have to keep it clear it to 20' or more for the winter? You must have a lot of traffic.

Yes, you need to keep full width clear. Ours is 14' wide, 400'+ long. If you do not keep the full width clear, it will get narrower and narrower with each snow fall!!

If you're plowing yes- you make banks. Snowblower can widen it anytime in the year, or at least mine does. Maybe you have a lot of melting/refreezing ice? But that wasn't my point. I was questioning 20+ feet.
