Hello all, I received my 60" Markham Med Duty Root Grapple today. This one is just like the light duty except it has 1/2" Steel instead of 3/8. I really like it and could have got by with the light duty but I see a tractor upgrade in my future so I went bigger. Here are some pics.....Mike

Very nice, you will keep that busy for awhile before it seems like work.:)

Looks good.. Are you going to tie up those dangling hoses before a stray root grapples them?

yes there is plenty of hose length on the grapple and I will definitely secure them better.....couldn't wait to try it out and just hooked them up for now........Thanks for the replies....Mike

I went with the 48" Light Duty but so far I really like mine too. I need to put a strap on my hoses as well, they are plenty long.

Mike...I know this is an older post...hoping you're still around on the forum...I'm confused (which, BTW, happens much more easily with every passing day :D), but you mention that you got the medium duty grapple with 1/2 inch steel and that the light duty version has 3/8ths steel??? Was that a typo? Would seem to me that the med duty would have the thicker steel. I'm really interested in getting a grapple...just starting to look around and research things. Now that you've had your grapple for a few years, are you still happy with it? Anything you'd have done/gotten differently. I figure you're the best guy to ask all of this of, as we have identical tractors...thanks for any info/input/advice.

NAI bought out the old Markhum. I had a 48" Markhum light duty beefed up with 1/2 steel in Texas some years ago. This year bought the same thing from NAI. Few things could be better with it, but to me it is the best bang for the dollar you can get in a grapple.

I get more confused everyday myself, but I'm pretty sure that 1/2" medium duty (1/2" = 4/8") is thicker than the 3/8" light duty. But maybe I'm not reading your post correctly. I am drinking decaff these days! Or maybe you're using "new math"! :)

Mine is NAI's 48" light duty, with optional spacers, and everything upgraded to 1/2". With the 1/2", it is a medium ++ duty in my opinion.

Glad you dredged this thread up, Dick. I was wondering what happened to the Markhams' after they sold their business. Maybe they will see this and give us an update, if they're still in the industry.

BTW, 1/2 is thicker than 3/8.

I also had my 48" Gator/Markham grapple upgraded to 1/2" steel...also added more spacer bars on the rake part. The only problem I've really had is I've managed to bend the grapple a bit; it still works fine, but is just a tad twisted from lifting an unbalanced log that wasn't gripped evenly by both grapple teeth (at least I think that's how I did it).

Everyone....what a moron I am! Just my learning disabilities and dyslexia kickin' in... Pardon the mental lapse...it dawned on me during a conversation with a local equipment dealer today...sorry...

And, jcummins...thanks for the info on Markhum...I'm gettin' close to making a final decision...man, there's alot of stuff out there!

Did learn today that I can use the lever that activates/deactivates the quick disconnect hydraulics on the back of my Mahindra to control the open/close hydraulic function of a grapple. Just run hydraulic lines from rear to the grapple...that's great!

Thanks again and sorry for the brainf$%t... :confused2:

Safe ops...

Dick, if you use the rear hydraulic outlets to power your grapple, be sure to add quick couplers to the lines somewhere behind the front end loader mounts. That way, when you want to remove the front end loader, you can disconnect the grapple hoses.

When I had my dealer install my grapple, they failed to do that. I.e., the two hoses from the rear hydraulics to the grapple have no couplers. So I couldn't remove my FEL (if I wanted to) without either removing those hoses or adding some disconnects.

Thanks Pappy....really appreciate that info! Would never have known.

Best,

Here's my NAI 60" light duty grapple. I don't see any way my tractor can hurt it, its a tank! Looks identical to the Markham posted earlier in the thread except for the NAI emblem on it.
