JD 5055E Cab/JD 2038R
Just bought a 5055E this summer, ran a special on a cab model and I jumped on it. First use the radio died and the fuel gauge went haywire. Dealer comes installs new radio and fuel gauge is working. Next use fuel gauge quits, dealer comes and replaces sending unit. Next use the lift arm stops working and a cable has came off the actuating arm, search for hours for metric thread nut to fix it, 4 hours later i fix it. Then a week ago clutch slips horribly, dealer comes and picks it up. Yesterday he calls and says its not slipping. I go to dealer today and sure enough it wont slip but oil is everywhere underneath. I suspected a rear main seal leak causing clutch slippage. Finally at my suggestion he removes the plug from the clutch housing and oil pours out. Now its break it in half and see what needs repaired. Im at the end of my rope with this tractor. Almost eveytime I use it something breaks, now they want to split the cases and go see what they can find. Im at the point I think JD should own the tractor, I didnt pay for a repaired tractor and its been nothing but trouble. Considering telling JD to keep the darn thing. Am I wrong here, any suggestions? Tractor has 40 hours on it.....

Does a "lemon law" apply to tractors?

I understand I have a warranty and I should give them the oppurtunity to fix it but at 40 hours they have to split the cases I just think I should either get a new tractor or my money back and they can keep their lemon. Very frustrated with JD at this point, I have owned 6 new JD's and never had an issue, this tractor is making up for the rest I suppose.

Mine has been split twice now and to the dealer countless times for many issues. They still haven't fixed a problem in 3rd and 4th gear that I have been complaining about since it was a year old.
I got the tractor back 2 weeks ago, still not fixed and they said they couldn't find the problem and don't know how to fix it so it's my problem now, they give up. Called John Deere NA and they said they would talk to the dealer and offer a solution. The solution they came up with is I trade in my tractor PLUS $35000 cash for a 5100e! Absolutely not!

I called John Deere NA again today and they said that is the end of the line, they won't do anything for me. I said are you sure? She said she was going to call the rep for my area and call me right back. 5 hours later I am still waiting for her to "call right back".

I don't know what happened to John Deere in the last few years, it's bad enough that the quality has gone down but now they don't even stand behind their product.

Well I talked to the dealer this morning and told him I didn't want the tractor, the way I see it , it belongs to them now. The biggest issue for me is safety, I cut some pretty bad hills with mine and if the clutch had went on that hill I wouldn't be typing this right now I promise you. He said they would split it today and see what is going on then report to John Deere the findings. He also said he would feel the same way as me at 40 hours and he fully expected me to go this route. The dealer has been great but he also said once this process begins it will bypass him and I will be dealing with corporate. I guess we shall see what happens now.

My condolences! I can easily imagine myself in you're situation and it would EAT ME UP. Also, I would never be happy with tractor again even it they did fix it. It's not logical but...

Well they split the tractor apart and don't see an obvious issue even though oil somehow got in the clutch housing. I called John Deere corporate and expressed my concerns with the tractor and he opened a case. Now I will be dealing with the Regional Manager and my dealer to try and get me in another tractor. So far nobody has disagreed with my concerns or resolution to this situation, we shall see if they follow through, stay tuned.....

I traded my cab 5085e after 60 hours. Leaks, lights etc. Running a massey now and in love. :) Good luck to you. Biggest thing for me was keeping it after warrantey. No way.

I have several threads about my sorry 5055e cab tractor. Mine needs to be split too. Supposedly an oring was installed backwards during assembly. This winter I'll get it carried up to them. I'm sick of the problems and refuse to keep this after warranty

Went today to see if I could trade for a new 50055E cab like what I have. There was 4 setting there and a massive puddle underneath one as I walked by. I walked to it and diesel fuel was dripping out of fuel lines somewhere. Dealer says, oh there was a leaker setting there before...I said yeah and its still setting there, that's coming from that new tractor. That really makes me feel warm and fuzzy about trading again. Walked in shop to see mine in 2 pieces, the clutch housing is about 18" long and had about 2" of oil standing in it from my mysterious leak. According to John Deere mine is the only tractor in the United States to have this failure.....I'm not buying it. Biggest issue for me is my 50055e is old tier 3 (no DPF), if they give me a new tractor it will be Tier4 which has the DPF. I really don't want my old lemon back though for safety reasons. I told him to move forward and see if they will trade even and they can keep mine. I hope I'm making the right decision.

I feel so sorry for you guys! I priced out a JD 5055E with hydraulic reverser and open station. I really liked the tractor. I read some stuff that gave me an uneasy feeling about it and went another route. So glad I did. I really hope you get your problems resolved and JD steps their quality standard back up to where they used to be.

If all the Deere competitors ever catch them in sales, it will be because Deere gave the market away with tractors and positions like the tale above.

I thought that ship sailed long ago? At least for the CUT and SCUT markets I read that Deere is a distant second.

It looks like they are now trying to give away the utility market as well. I still like JD CUTs... all but the price tag.

I was being kind.

Yup. Deere can still be the elephant in the room but that doesn't have to stay that way forever. Kubota, and others', drip, drip, drip of quality and standing behind their product has built a loyal clientele that Deere must not be too worried about in a hubris kind of way. It's human nature that a king thinks he will always be the king.

It is sad that you are going though so many problem with your JD. I guess I have been lucky with my two JD. Only miner problem one had a power steering line cut because the tire hit it. And the loader cylinder need to be replaced.
I do have admit that JD is a hard company to deal with. If you need to talk to a rep it is like pulling teeth with no novocaine.
When you call JD they have a girl that answer the phone and send you to your dealer. I don't the dealer. I been there. I want someone higher up that can help me. What do you get. Nothing. Back to the dealer until they get a rep to see what going on.
The reason why It bother me so much I work at a Toyota Dealer. God for bid if a customer is not treated right or there car or truck don't get fix right to the customer likening and they call Toyota Corporate . Toyota calls us before the phone is hung up and the next week a rep is at the dealer with the customer trying to correct the problem.
Maybe JD should learn for one the top auto manufacture in the world.

What you refer to about customer calling Toyota is the way it was when I was a JD dealer service manager back in the mid 70's-mid 80's. If customer contacted JD branch office in Dallas then I recieved a call from JD branch area service manager ASAP. It difficult to understand all the reliability problems that I read about that JD tractors are experiencing. I have a late model('11) 70 HP tractor and it's not green. It has 1200 hrs on it with zero problems.

This is an interesting thread since Deere was on my list of cab tractors I was considering. Is this another brand of tractor that they painted green and sold as their own from some other country?
