I have a John Deere 5410 tractor that I use on my cattle farm. This winter I noticed a slow dripping engine coolant leak below the radiator. I checked the hoses and the leak appears to be coming from the bottom of the radiator. To get through the cold winter months, I would check the coolant level each time I started the tractor and would add enough to get to the minimum line on the coolant storage tank. For the last few months, I've added about 1 gallon of coolant to the system.
Now that the weather has warmed up and the snow is gone, I'm getting ready to fix the radiator issue. I've never done a radiator removal and fix before, so this is new to me. Since I'll need to drain the coolant I'm going to buy an engine block heater and install that as well. I live in Northern MI and our winters are cold so the engine block heater will be nice. Since I'll be draining the coolant, I think I'll replace the coolant thermostats as well.
Was wondering if the guru's have any words of wisdom for me? The part number for the JD 5410 radiator is RE70236 which is about $1,029 from shop.deere.com. I did a google search and it appears I can buy an aftermarket radiator from anywhere from $250 to $700. In shopping for a radiator, what should I be looking for spec wise? I hate to replace the radiator with something that won't last. I did a search locally for a radiator repair shop and the closest one is about 1.25 hours away so having the current radiator repaired may not be less costly either. When removing the radiator, any other parts that I should replace? Any recommendations for opinions for this newbie would be greatly appreciated.
