The 4wd option is somewhere close to 1000 so if the tractor he is selling you is 2wd it may not be as good of deal as your friend thought.

The (absence of a) differential bulge on the front axle is the best clue.
SOMEWHERE there is a rough table of equivalence, e.g. so many HP on 2WD are equivalent to some different number (fewer) of HP on a 4WD (or MFWD, FWA, whatever called) tractor.
It is generally cheaper to get that pulling power from 4WD than from a bigger 2WD.

Another tip to look for: Four wheel drive should have a fill cap on the front axle for gear oil

Either way, 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive I think it is a lot of tractor for 3 acres. Just my opinion.

If your dealer is misleading you (or you just feel he is) go to somewhere else you trust.
