Tractor
2009 john deer 3005
Hello everyone,

Please excuse my ignorance but i was wondering if there is a way to determine if a tractor is 4 whell drive or not. I am getting ready to purchase a John Deer 3005 series, 27HP and the dealer assured me it is 4 wheel drive. But I am beginning to question what he says anymore as he has misled me a couple times with other issues such as financing and such. I will be up there in a few days to sign the paperwork and take ownership of my new tractor and i would like to verify myself if it is in fact 4 wheel drive. Cany anyone give me any hints as to what to look for? Again i appologize for my ignorance, this is my first tractor. Thank you for your help.

any kind of lug on the front tires would generally indicate 4wd.Ribbed tires are usually 2wd.I do not want to sound mean but if you cannot figure out if it is 4wd or not maybe you should have someone else doing your tractor work.

Aside from what milkie62 said, the tractor will have a 4x4 engagement lever or switch if it's a 4x4. Look under it too, it will have a driveshaft going to the front axle if it's a 4x4......If your still in question send some pics and about 100 people will let you know what it is in a jiffy!

Thanks Carpenter, thats all I needed to know, wasnt sure if tractors had an engagement lever/switch or not since they are tractors and not trucks and didnt know if the gearing was different either. But that helps me out alot. Much appreciated.

No worries Mikie62, I will do fine doing my own tractor work. Im a city boy and I build houses for a living, not a farm boy and never owned a tractor or even looked at one. Just need one for a 3 acre parcel I built my home on and want to do a little loader work and weed abatement. So just wanted a clue as to what to look for on it to make sure it was 4 wheel drive. Not to sound mean but maybe you should take up a couple classes on compassion and reduction of sarcasim? :D

From the JD website "optional 4-wheel drive is available for extra traction and pulling power".

So, your model could be either 2 or 4 wheel drive.

Check what the others have posted...ribbed tires, lever to engage, driveshaft, ect.

If your dealer is misleading you (or you just feel he is) go to somewhere else you trust.

Well we can't all be experts in every field but it would be best for you to become more informed before you make a tractor purchase. A little time spent researching here on TBN might aid you in your selection process and in return save you money and grief.

Thanks everyone, Ivan, I wish I could go to another dealer but the deal I am getting with this one particular dealer is incredible. Basically im getting it for 300 dollars above cost, 14.9k out the door with loader and box scraper. I know this for fact because I had a friend who worked for a dealer that sold New Hollands and John Deers and he showed me the invoice of what his dealership payed for the tractor. Even he said to snatch that one up because he couldnt come close to the price. Unfortunately he recently passed away so I was unable to go to him for questions. But Ive been looking and researching tractors for about 6 months now and no one can come close to that deal. So im going for it. You can bet your bottom dollar though that I wont be buying my parts or getting service from that dealer. Thanks again...

Here is a couple things to look for mechanical front wheel drive (MFWD or 4wd) on a JD 3005.

Front axle had a differential.

There is a MFWD (4wd) engagement lever just to the left of the gear shift lever in the Operator Station.
