425 hyd fluid ????

Hi everyone, I have 425 1996 model, I noticed today that the level of oil is low.... This is not engine oil but this is checked under the seat and has a dipstick. Is this regular HYD oil to add or a special John Deere oil? I don't have any books for this garden tractor.

This is listed in the on-line 425 Operator's Manual:

Anti-Chatter Transmission Oil
NOTE: Tractor is filled with John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARD® (J20D) transmission oil at the factory. DO NOT mix oils.

These tractors are equipped with a hydraulic wet disc PTO clutch. To avoid chatter, use only Low Viscosity HY-GARD® (J20D) transmission oil. DO NOT use type "F" automatic transmission fluid.

John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARD® (J20D) transmission oil is specially formulated to minimize clutch chatter, and to provide maximum protection against mechanical wear, corrosion, and foaming. Low Viscosity HY-GARD® may be used in all temperatures.

That is a special John Deere hydro-static oil called Lo-Vis HyGard. Have used that for many years. It cost about 13+ a gallon so isn't that expensive either.

I never have, I didn't know there was a filter on it for that. All I ever changed was the oil and filter. Is it hard to do that?

Easy Peasy Japan Easy. Just a spin on filter and changes just like the engine.

Where is the drain plug on the transmission? Underneath? I looked under and saw the filter..looks like somebody had tried to take the filter off because it is bent in in a couple of places. I hope it is not froze on there?

The filter has to be changed. The plug for draining, if I remember correctly, is on in the lower rear. Owners manual will tell, or even a google search. Good luck.

Deere Dude is correct on the drain plug.. to the rear, lower right-of-center. (per pic in owners manual). Will be good to have one.

Okay I found the plug and I have no manual to go by...I'm going to change the engine oil tomorrow and this weekend go for the tranny change...wish me luck and I hope the filter isn't to tight to get off???????

Can't be too tight to get off.. in worst case drive a large screwdriver through it as a crank.. it WILL come off.
