2005 NH TC29DA

My 2005 NH TC29DA has an intermittant starting problem. Some days I turn key, let glow plug light go out and it starts great. Other days same procedure, just click, click. I keep trying and eventually it always starts, so far! I have read previous posts regarding this issue a long time ago including a NH bulletin suggesting a new starter relay. I was wondering if anyone has new insight into this issue.

The TC series has a problem with internal corrosion on the battery cables where they were pressed into the terminals. It allows volts to flow but not amps under load, hence everything lights up but cannot start. You cannot see it by visual inspection. You can bypass the cables with a set of jumper cables to diagnose it. Or just replace the battery cables to see if it fixes your problem. I matched mine up at O'Rielly's when I replaced mine on the TC40DA. Cheaper than getting the NH cables.

They also benefit from the starter relay mod. Basicly takes away alot of the load from the key circuit and puts it on a external relay...or you could have have a stuck starter.

Next time it just clicks hold it in the start possition and tap the starter with a hammer. Do this a few times. If it starts every time its your starter.

This thread will give you some insight on the starter relay modification. Key switches can be a problem also. I have yet to have cable issue, but it is well documented and I have performed the starter rely mod and replaced my key switch with NAPA one that is much more robust than the OEM.

I am in the process of changing out the battery cables. Easy enough to remove the ground cable and find a replacement, the hot cable is more complicated in that it has 2 extra wires built into it on the starter solenoid end. I know I will have difficulty finding the factory cables but does anyone have any ideas regarding part # CNH 87302269, REV A, A16930?
I believe that I will have to fabricate the 2 extra wires going to the alternator as stand alone items.

That’s what I thought too..
But as I was at Walmart one day I happened to stumble upon the exact cable I needed with 2 extra wires.!!
If ur not in a big hurry, give it a shot.

I checked everywhere online and at 3 local NH dealers for the positive battery cable. No local dealers had it in stock, all could order it for $ 206.00. I went to Tractor Supply and bought both positive and ground cables for $46.00. I had to add the 3 additional wires and just barely had enough room on the starter solenoid stud to make it work. My old fingers combined with working around the loader made it difficult. So far, no clicking and instant start! Hard to believe that battery cables can go bad!

However, battery cables have been going bad basically since the year after they were invented due to corrosion.
