My 2005 NH TC 29 DA starting problem is acting up again (still). I replaced the battery, battery to starter cables, new NAPA starting switch. After all that , it started fine for a few days then back to its click, click, click then start routine. The glow plug seems to be operating normally. Sometimes when warm it starts normally, sometimes not. Could it be the starter?

Have you installed the dedicated starting circuit? My TC33D was acting like what you have described until did this modification, that was probably 20+ years ago.

No I haven't, what does that entail?

I just added a start relay on a TC40 on Friday Owner had been fighting if for some time and finally got fed up with it. Works fine now. You can source a kit from numerous suppliers or pick up a four or five pin parts house relay and make up your own wires. (which is what I do)

Here's a diagram I made up when I did my ZD mowers if you choose to do it yourself:

I bought the relay from amazon and am in the installation process. My starter has a built in solenoid on top of it. It has a wire ( white with clear plastic covering) that I believe is the trigger wire. This wire comes out from behind the solenoid and there is no way to see how it connects to the solenoid without removing the starter. I plan to cut this wire where I can get to it and follow the directions to connect to the new relay. Does this sound right? I searched Google looking for a photo or diagram of this particular starter/solenoid combo but couldn't find one I don't want to cut the wire unless I am sure it is the correct one. Workng behind the FEL doesn't help. I appreciate any feedback.

It sounds like you are on the right tract. The only difference is the color of the wire you are describing as white, whereas the electrical diagram that I have for my tractor indicates that wire's color as purple (see below). I've looked at a number of different diagrams for the TC series and New Holland was consistent in that solenoids wire being purple.

Maybe your starter was replaced or had some wiring modifications, regardless your concept is correct.

Next time its clicking take a test wire and jump power to the small wire on the starter. If it cranks or starts like normal you need to do the starter relay modification.

What I think happens is the starting circuit in these and many older machines gets corrosion or high resistance and dosnt let the small wire of the starter get enough volts/amps. Its a pretty easy and cheap fix. Also a free test to do.

Thank you very much. On closer examination of my wire diagram specifically for 2005 TC 29 DA is shows the trigger wire as being Tan. It could be that my old (80 years ) eyes aren't working that good. Tan is pretty close to white so I am going to proceed on my project waiting until tomorrow in case I receive any feedback telling me differently. Thanks again!

Hard to beat that, so Tan it is!

I certainly hope this helps your starting problem as it has so many others.

I finished the install yesterday and it starts like a charm so far. The trigger wire is definitely tan on my machine. I needed to drill a hole to mount the relay on the left side as the cover hit it when using pre-existing holes. I used a big treaded hole on the left side of the engine for ground. I am not declaring victory yet as I been this far with other fixes previously and then the no start clicking gremlins hit. Thanks for all the advice. As I finished up the project I got to thinking that at least I could do this type of repair on my older (2005) machine. Think about what a computer based tractor will require.

Time will tell for, but this fix has helped many others including myself for many years now.
