Looking for skidding winch

Keep an eye on Facebook Marketplace , as there are several new and used items popping up in the area from time to time. Some are great deals, while others are not so much.

I see used ones regularly on marketplace. That’s where I got mine a Norse 450, 9000# pull. It was well used when I got it and I have worked it hard over the years and it’s still a hard working machine with minimal maintenance. I’ve replaced the cable once.

I tried to buy a used winch but everyone I saw was used hard/abused. I bought a new 7000# Igland winch and have had zero issues in the past 9 years. It was less than $500 to upgrade to a new unit.
I also bought an Igland when I saw the prices that people wanted for used ones. I bought it up in St. Johnsbury, VT. They delivered it for cheap money and the price was really good.

I got mine in Chester VT. They seem to be around these parts. Plenty of small time loggers.

I have had a Farmi for 30 years, replaced the cable twice, it has served me well. But equipment is so expensive that I now consider renting or hiring. Have you inquired about how much a logger would charge to bring in his skidder and moving your precut and trimmed logs? In our application they could skid a years worth of wood in a day.

That takes all the fun out of doing it yourself. I suppose if money is no object then it is easier to have someone else do the work for you.

Loggers don't seem to have much interest in small jobs around here. They have a bunch of expensive and heavy equipment to move to the job. As much as one might think we can plan tree removal jobs to be once and done, it seems to be a recurring, never ending job like when an old oak decided to fall over a few months ago. PTO tractor winch makes it realistically possible to move a lot of downed trees much faster if this is the kind of repetitive work someone will be doing.
