Everyone is entitled to their opinion even if it is wrong, things are MUCH different now than they were 50 years ago. Engines are built to much tighter tolerances than engines even built 20 years ago hence the use of lighter weight oil so it will flow to critical engine parts that would otherwise be starved for lubrication from heavier lubricants. And just because something feels slick does not mean it is still capable of doing the job, oil sample analyse is the ONLY true way to determine that.

You bought it, it's your so treat it how you wish but do not come here giving out info based on 50 year old ideals without in depth investigation to back it up. This to me is like saying medical advances of the last 50 years that helps you live longer so you can have these bogus opinions should be thrown out.

Anyway I see this whole thread is turning into a

Your right... My dads last car had aluminum heads and block, at 500tho we took valve cover off to look and the aluminum walls were black like someone painted them but no sludge , but 0-30 oil shake it and its like water, id place atleast 5-30

Should we start talking about best filters now?
Is this leading to one of those toilet paper roll filter doo-hickies? As a mechanic, I've seen well maintained engines and ones that were not. This is why I always look in the oil fill cap before buying anything used. Also, pull the dipstick and look/smell the oil. Never just look to see if the filter looks new.

I do the same, look at fill cap, all i'm saying is sludge is created by mixing different oil weighs and brands not old oil, 15-40 diesel oil is very good oil, my dad would place it in his cars because a diesel works harder than a gas motor, higher compression, if you look on back it says you can place in automotive vehicles, but like stated in a post in this thread new motors have less clearance

Used engine oil has contaminants from combustion engines in them.
Oil comes in many colors, recycled oil is darker

And I thought I was chancing it with 10,000 mile oil changes

I think oil is often changed to often but to not change it at all? I’m probably not going to buy into that idea.

Engineering guidelines for maintenance are established over all kinds of weather, conditions of use by owner, ambient temperature, and go by extremes we may run into. The best case scenario is to take what they advise and follow that because none of us has the money to test every extreme that is out there. I may fudge on hours or miles at times because I am lazy, but I try to follow approved guidelines.

I recall about 50 years ago I was comparing notes with an older friend on how long should be the limit for oil changes. This was when engines and every thing seemed dirtier, but at that time he went about 10k miles when the standard was 2k miles generally. He said his family station wagon car never was greased and had 140,000 miles on it and still runs like a top. He may have gotten lucky, but I don't think anyone would say he had the right attitude about maintenance even though he had many miles on his car.

Someone mentioned a toilet paper filter. I had an older friend at the time that was really pushing the idea and was fairly convincing but I told him many engineers and manufacturers had their business on the line so why take a chance with some untested by theories.

You were talking about the normal darkening of the oil being due to water earlier, not the choco milkshake. Big difference between those and their causes.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Omg OP, you cant be serious! You do you man, the rest of use that have some sense will change our oil.

This is absolutely not true. My dad ran a re-refinery for Safety-Kleen, recycling old oils for many years. The recycled oil was not visually discernible from new oil. I know this for a fact because he brought glass sample bottles home to show me.

Years ago there was a guy on here with a rounded drain plug. I wish you could have given him this advice. It would have prevented a lot of headaches on here.
