Not gonna run the numbers, but I think I could run a gasoline generator for less than that per month. My bills are usually in the $60 range with a high month being around $80


That can't be per month. I run around 5,000 KwHrs per year, generally around 400-450/mo. I'm on track to be under 400 this month.

I should have also said that our billing is for 2 months, sorry.

We have almost 40 year old 3000 sqft house with two stage geothermal heating & cooling, two heating/cooling zones - no wood, gas or oil is used.

• Thermostats (upstairs & downstairs) are set for comfortable settings all year round.
• Electricity cost is $ .0816 / kWh, basic monthly fixed fee is $12/mo.
• We used 15,680 kWh during the last 12 months
• Two large refrigerators & three freezers.
• There are no taxes applied to the bills by the state or county etc.
• It works out to $3.90/day on average all year round.

It will be interesting to see what the future brings, but I am sure our rates will go up since almost 30% of ours is generated with natural gas.

We have PPL for our electric delivery company. We can shop for the generating/supplying company. Last year it was .066/KWH and that contract runs out 1/21/22. The rate will jump to %0.0939 and I can lock it in for 3 years. Shopping on the open market for 12 month or more, no cancelation fee, no monthly fees that is the cheapest rate. The rates quickly go north of $0.10/kwh. So, my rates are going up 50%. And with all the emphasis on electric vehicles and the Gov't standing in the way of pipelines I don't see electric rates going down.

And up north here I don't think the payback is there for solar.

Our home is all electric/geo-thermal except for the cooktop. But my home was built in 2001 and has 6" framing and is all brick skinned. The attic is heavily insulated. On a nice sunny day the 12' windows facing south warm the living room.

And on the subject of VAT tax, most Americans don't know what the hell that means. They think a 6-7% sales tax is outrageous. And VAT and gas taxes are regressive, ie they impact poor people more than wealthy people. But Canadians and Europeans do get all that "free" stuff.

For a total of $135.18 using 765 KWH so as far as I'm concerned it is just shy of $0.18 per kwh.

She also called this source and asked them similar questions but at the end issue was solved and we paid around $60 for that months.

I lived and worked in Grant county back in the late '70's and early 80's. Seemed like we paid $.015/kwa for residential then. The processing plant I worked at had some old electric boilers because the electrical power there was the cheapest in the nation. We told Grant County PUD that we were planning to put new, larger electric boilers in. The Grant County PUD made a deal with us and they covered the bill for us to install a first class natural gas fired boiler system and subsidized our gas bill for years because it was that much more profitable for them to sell their power to Californian power companies than to their own customers. We on the mechanical end were happy to do it because the water treatment required for electric boilers in those days was a real PITA.

I just got my bill for Nov. and Dec. It's $599.00 House is 4600 square feet, all electric, on geothermal and I heat the attached 650' garage to 56 degrees. I'm hoping to have the radiant heat on in my new 1360' shop next winter and see what those costs are before deciding on a waste oil boiler which I would also use to supply some heat to the house. Power here is just a little over $.14 KWH. Summer usage is about $250.00 for two months keeping the a/c at about 74 degrees. Total for last year was a shade over $2500.00. Not cheap, but hard to justify cutting wood or putting up with the heat

Last year we were living in a 4300 square foot home and our power bill was $7.50 per month except for February and March when they were $56 and $47 respectively. In a much smaller home this year in a much colder climate. Electricity is approximately $.0545 per KWH. Bills have been in the mid $100s range.

In the Rocky Mountains at 7000 feet we get a lot of sun, and don't often need heat during the day. For electricity we pay about 11 cents per kW Hr plus whatever surcharges get tacked on by the politicians that year. For a 2500 sq. ft house in the mountains - well insulated with heating chores about evenly divided propane & electric heat - our electric bill runs about $200/month in the summer and $350/ month in the winter.
That's probably above average here, but not by much.

We have a wood stove that can easily heat most of the house.... but we don't use it much except for cold snaps.
Another expense for remote rural areas is that electrical service is not as dependable as it was back when power lines were new. So like most people in rural areas we have enough generator power to run the house for three or four days. That is needed maybe half a dozen times a year.

Northern Ontario here, I just switched from 'time of use' pricing for Hydro-one to fixed rate residential-rural. As long as I use under 1,000 kwh/month I pay $0.092/kwh. Generally I use under the 1,000 hour mark. Oil furnace, wood furnace and wood space heater. Use the oil furnace when I go out for the day, I also use that oil for the tractor.
The wood furnace (Drolet Tundra II) in the basement keeps it at 76°F. The wood space heater (Regency) keeps the upstairs/main floor at 80°.

I don't have a time-of-day option. When I did (in NJ) I was able to shift 2/3 of my usage to off hours. But the NJ off peak rate was still higher than the regular rate in PA. NJ sucks in every respect.

Diesel - 1,5 €/L
Have heard that in Finland petrol prices now are over 2 €/L

But for my Yanmar I buy PRO, because that contains less bio-$h%t. In regular diesel that "bio" is tended to "grow" a kind of algaes if left for longer while.

No argument but do you suppose average European on the street know how relatively cheap fuel is here, or low taxes we pay when compared to them?

Interesting.

Our standard gas (petrol) is 10% Ethanol and usually is available in three grades: regular 87 octane, plus 91 octane and premium 93 octane. E85 which is 85% ethanol is available in some places (not around here) and is cheaper than regular and also less energy=less gas mileage/gal. But not all cars/trucks can use it.

Right now gas is about $3.73 reg, $4.03 plus and $4.33 premium. Diesel is about $4.28 but it is NOT bio and that includes road tax which is $0.995. Around here we can buy off road diesel at the pump and then they add on sales tax of 7%, so about $3.50ish.

You can do the G->L and $->€ calculations.

EDIT: I found a converter so $3.73 = 0.87 €/l and Diesel would be 1.0 €/l

In that same vein last time I was in Ireland we went shopping to make dinner for the family (8 men & women). It was interesting because the stores were so small and limited choice unless we went to Aldi or Lidl.

With prices being in € and weights being in Half Kilos we didn't know what was what. And they called the cuts of meat by different names. No matter; we picked out a nice beef roast and veggies and had a lovely meal.

BTW that type difference is still evident in US. In the NE they've never heard of Tri Tip and in south central PA one man I know was unaware corned beef came in anything other than a tin can. Imagine his surprise when he was invited to a Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner by an irish-heritage lass. And here Chicken Pot Pie is not what it is in the NY Metro area.
