Possible DEF shortages

Here we go into panic mode again. Hoard! 🤪
Easy for you to say.
Not speaking for others, but I’m not in panic mode.
Ever try making a living and get basic supplies needed to drive to work?

Buy that military truck and problem solved lol. I specifically bought an 05 Cummins to avoid that trash. I’d have about bought a pre 95 truck to get a mechanical injection diesel but they’re getting pretty old now.

Local stores stock BlueDEF and KleenDEF in 2.5 gal jugs and they carry KleenDEF in 55 Gal drums. Some of our filling stations have the DEF fill pump for large amounts.

One persons stocking up is another persons hoarding.
If you use something routinely and you can stock up on it it's prudent to do so.

With the supply chain shortages a 6 month supply of everything one can store makes life easier.

I don't use DEF, but if I did I would stock up on some if the dates were far enough out. Never hurts to have some if/when supply chain issues show up.

First I've heard of this one, well no problem I don't use it until the weather gets warm. That's when I start across country pulling the fifth wheel RV.

Our local Lowes has 150 gallons of it in stock... Should I go buy it all ??? And resell at a much higher price??? I could be rich... at the expense of others... Oh, wait... that's the problem...

Yeah, go ahead and put it with your toilet paper!

If I had a truck or piece of equipment that used that crap now is about the time I’d be getting it deleted.

If you want to see panic, watch what happens to trucking when DEF can’t be found. The flow of goods STOPS
And we thought pre-emissions truck were popular before....

A supplier called my desk phone @ 7am this morning, attempting to send me this link:

Cummins playing supply chain whack-a-mole for everything but semiconductors

While you're waiting on DEF, you'll have more time to chase the engine parts you can't get either..... (not picking on Red C, everybody is fighting the same battle).

I found his comment on semiconductors especially chilling....

“That assumes we actually convince the industry they need to build more,” he said.

The normal trends in semiconductor manufacturing + Covid + LandRush/GoldRush mentallity towards EVs means that the old-school (less $ producing) geometries that automotive often runs on are not top-of-mind for chip companies.

It's been a rough-ride for ground transportation the last 2 years, but I suspect it'll get worse yet.....

To some degree it's on timing. If you keep a supply ahead when something is readily available it's stocking up.
If you buy more than you need of something in short supply which prevent others from getting what they need it's hoarding.

Pre-shortage I always bought toilet paper and paper towels in the biggest package I could find. Since they started to be in short supply I only pick up 4 rolls at a time.

Ford, GM, Chrysler will start building their own ECM's/chips and the EV market is very soon to become favorable with the American consumer.

Yep, anything made in China is controlled by them. They can create shortages and surpluses. They can do it as a means of controlling a country’s way of life and national security.
Those items you mentioned are heavily made in China.

This is serious business. People need to wake up and realize that production in the US needs to be restored to levels that can ensure national security and flow of commerce.
I agree.

One of the best summations I've seen in the general media lately:

How the West invited China to eat its lunch

Why do you have to get your DEF at the auto parts store or at a discount store? Why not take a container to the gas station (meaning truck stop where the 18 wheelers fill up) and get your DEF from the pump? No, the drivers won't like you being there, but if that's the only place it's available, then do it, but try not to inconvenience the big rigs since they're delivering stuff to the rest of us.

Ok.
I buy quite a bit of the stuff. Maybe you live in a different universe, but we are low or out.

Hay - any heavy-truck dealers in your travel path ?

A Mack/Volvo shop I used to deal with often had a good stock of jugs, but that was earlier this year, on this side of the border.....

Just read yesterday about DEF/Urea shortages in Asia. Trucks are idled in South Korea as China has stopped exporting to them. Big problem.

If you have a DEF truck, I wouldn't consider it crazy to hoard a pretty good supply.
Or buy a non def truck. I’m seeing a lot of old VW over rigs on the interstate tar been restored/ rebuilt.

South Korea let’s things like def slow them down?

My 96 is mechanical injection. Believe pre 98.5 are. There were a few 24 valve, mechanical injection made during the transition that are highly sought after. Good puller, extremely reliable and fuel economy of anything made since. Last of the bulletproof breed. Yes getting older.
