Tractor
1997 Kubota M5400S
Hello to all,

Wanted to determine what kind of hydraulic fluid you are using in your tractor? I used the Kub UDT before, but the price has skyrocketed. I know it's much cheaper to use expensive hyd-fluid vs a trip to the dealer to fix my hydraulic system. However, has anyone found a suitable alternative that performs well?

Usage: total of 910 hrs since Jan 1997, so light usage for weekend farmer at best
Environment: Subjected to much more heat than cold...SE texas region, tractor always kept inside shed when not in use. Shed is cedar pickets w corrugated metal roof, meaning, not climate controlled.

Thanks,
tstex

Synchronized shuttle

The 1997-era Kubota M-Series tractors (such as the M5400) primarily utilize a
synchromesh transmission with a mechanical shuttle shift, allowing for easier direction changes. These models typically feature 8 forward and 8 reverse gears (8F/8R) or a 12F/12R configuration, designed for high-performance utility work.
Key Transmission Details:
  • Shuttle Shift: Features a column-mounted lever for forward/reverse, facilitating quick directional changes.
  • Gear Drive: A manual transmission, usually requiring the clutch for range changes.
  • Speed Configurations: Commonly 8 or 12 forward speeds, depending on the specific model variation within the M-Series range.
  • Utility Focus: Built for heavy-duty, all-day operation.

I'd open my wallet and get the Super UTD2, it's about $150 per 5 gallon bucket, you will need 2 of those, plus a single gallon jug ...

Also remember if your is 4X4, your front axle takes about 2 gallons, at least mine does, AND there is no filter up there ... I like to keep that changed out often!

I purposely did not get a 4x4 due to not wanting the add'l maintenance or overhead. Since i have a lg frt end loader, i have always been able to extricate myself when temporarily stuck,..and, i have a lot of grt country nbors 👍
