Every 10 hours of tractor/loader run-time or so:

1) carry a rag as you go and wipe each zerk before you grease.
2) pump until you see some movement or old grease starting to push out
3) never clean your tractor, it doesn't mind being greasy. You can just wipe off any high contact areas as needed. If you have huge globs falling onto the ground, you pumped too much lol.

I'm down with all this, and also the cleaning part. I hear people power washing them, personally I don't think that's a great idea at all. I imagine the only time I'm ever gonna power wash mine is if/when it's time to sell it and I need it looking pretty.

I am not a frequent tractor washer.
That said: when I do wash I use 200 degree HOT water, at 1,000 psi.max.
Cold water, no matter what the pressure, just blows the grease around.

Great points. I always try to avoid spraying anywhere that I wouldn't want water. From the deck to the loader - I just worry about messing something up with water.

Even so, don't you just end up with a greasy mess on the ground afterwards? Do you wash it over gravel?

Guys, if you want 'em clean lookin, here's a pointer I picked up when I had motorcycles. I'd spray WD-40 on, wipe away dirt and grease with paper towels. Fenders, frame, wheels, tank, whatever. It works awesome, try it. Leaves a nice sheen, too.

WD-40 is really great stuff. Hands filthy/greasy? Before washing with soap, spray the 40 on your hands, wipe away with a paper towel. You're welcome! :dance1:

Whenever possible I try to wash to off in the neighbors driveway. Problem solved.

Thing is, not many fellas will ever change a position once they take one. Think Fonzie from happy days. "I was wr...wr.. wro.. wron...."
Very very few will change their mind. Or ever take a "well, I will give it a look" or have an open mind. No, it is always "I am right, I said I was right, my mind is made up and nothing on this earth will ever change that." this is just the way most guys (not all) roll.

Yeah, I thought I made a mistake once... but I was wrong :D:D:D

Yep, thats it!. How many guys on here will say, "you know I was wrong to say that or act that way".... very very few. Most guys are pretty "muleheaded". Once they set their hooves in the ground and dig in, that's it. End of discussion. I ain't ever changing my mind, No sir! I don't want to appear weak or foolish or a bad decision maker.. noooo way!.

Smart people change their mind all the time. Especially when presented with new facts and new experiences.

I wash over a sandy grassed area that I don't plan to walk or drive through, for at least several weeks

Eeeisch. I love WD40 too, works great in so many unexpected ways. But it might be wise to consider and remember that WD40 is comprised mainly of carcinogenic chemicals. I'm sure it says quite clearly on the can not to get it on your skin. Please do not spray WD40 in any high contact areas where you will have to touch it later, and certainly not directly onto your skin! Just my daily safety PSA.

Where did you get that from??

And I quote, Carcinogen Status: None of the components are listed as a carcinogen or suspect carcinogen by IARC,
NTP, ACGIH or OSHA.

If you leave it on your skin, yeh you could maybe get some contact dermatitis. You could get that from anything, motor oil, gasoline, whatever. So, don't leave it on there, wipe it off, then go wash your hands.

You have to be kidding right? Of all the chemicals I use WD-40 is my very last concern. I have been washing the grease off my hands with WD-40 for decades! Works great!

Hmmmm, Interesting. WD40 is ~50% petroleum distillates which are widely regarded as potentially carcinogenic, particularly when benzene is present (commonly, as with gasoline). And are known to affect kidney and liver function.

It is convenient for them that our capitalist society has deemed corporate profits more important than human health, and thus they can keep their chemical ingredients a trade secret, and do no human health testing. But if the can label and MSDS advises you not to get it on your skin, and then immediately wash it off if you accidentally do, there's a reason for that.

I'm not afraid of WD-40, I use it all the time and yeah it often gets on your hands. But as with basically any industrial chemical, it is simply foolish to intentionally expose and introduce it into your body and bloodstream. Wearing PPE (gloves) is probably the best starting point.

Sorry for the diversion, back to greasing!

Yep, learned the WD40 trick and it is now my 'go to' hand cleaner.
2 squirts, shop rag and good to go.
For ultimate hand wash use dish detergent. It even does great job cleaning soot!

Yup yup, and the liquid dish soap, works great too. Right on man! :drink:

Too much grease is just wasted money and a mess.
Too much grease is a blown seal or worse a prematurely worn bearing.
Why do things wrong when you can do them right with half the effort?

About as widely regarded as is the risk of vaccines among anti-vaxxers, so... I'm sure the great state of California has deemed pet distillates as carcinogenic though, along with screwing and smelling flowers or some such lol.

But benzene yes, I have heard of benzene being a carcinogen.

Best bet is to wear some gloves, no worries then, everybody happy.
