Medium Duty Truck

I haven’t seen any work ready military trucks for a good price. Being 6x6 seems to be a big draw that keeps the price up. I’ve seen a lot better prices on used road tractors and I’d rather have one of those over a military truck.

Having driven a deuce and a half, yes, I know that they are not powerful. I was thinking of local farm use where four wheel or more power would be a plus.

They’re “off road powerful” (traction, gearing and the way the back tandems can go over obstacles).

Thanks all for the continued replies. Still looking.... Since it is a wish, not a got to have, I have time to wait and decide.
I looked at Dueces also but they would not be ideal for me. While the offroad capability would be nice, I need a tighter turn radius. Plus they are heavy. I need something 12,000 lbs or less to stay under 26000 lbs.

The good thing is you have a LOT of inventory to chose from. Probably the most common medium duty truck is a 4x2 at/under 26K (under CDL).
I’m trying to find a used, heavy duty 4x4 over 33,000 with automatic, air brakes and trailer package. Few to none to be found. I have to build it from a 4x4 chassis like a power company truck. I’m not in an urgent need, either, but I’m not getting any younger hahaha.

I saw one of those advertised last week, IH 2554? , 4wd, short chassis.
He had it setup to pull a goose.
Wanted 22k for it.

Ran across a IH 1950B (Cab over).
1981 with 16' flat bed.
DT466, 5x2, Air Brakes
$3k
Thought about putting a dovetail on it with ramps to haul stuff.

Not to beat the CDL dead horse but I contacted my local State Police Motor Carrier unit and asked the question was a CDL required to operate a 26,001 lb or higher vehicle when used for Personal use.
The reply I got back was quoting the State Code along with the statement that since it was going to be used for personal use, CDL was not required.
I guess the next thing is how to define "personal" use.

Use of the truck without any involvement of payment for services, no commercial or “for profit” use.
Can’t haul for money.

Right, I get that. One of my friends was stopped going to a show. The Trooper said since they give out ribbons, this was for "Profit" and he needed a CDL. Was given a warning over it.
Too open to interpretation.

Just get a 26k truck, or get a big RV

I liked the idea of semi with a sleeper and chemical toilet being an RV.......

Lots of horse people have been stung by that recently I hear. I'd doubt a ribbon alone would count, but if there was any prize money or prizes for winning, regardless of you winning or not would count.

Since you and I are both in VA - I grabbed the pertinent information for you: "A drivers license (Class D) allows you to operate any vehicle or small truck less than 26,001 pounds that is exempt from commercial drivers license (CDL) requirements." "Commercial drivers license requirements do not apply to: vehicles operated by persons only for personal use, such as recreational vehicles and rental moving vans."

NOTE: It says 'such as' which is only an example - not the only 2 options

A lot of private haulers will post NOT FOR HIRE letters (but it's not required). As long as you are not receiving ANY compensation at any time during a round-trip transit, you are fine.

Weather you decide you need a CDL or not......I dont think you understand GVW vs GVWR.

You are pushing to try and stay under 12k curb weight on the truck so the 14k trailer wont exceed 26k....

But thats not how it works. You need the GVWR. The weight RATING of the truck. Not what it actually weighs. And with a 14k trailer.....the only way you are staying UNDER 26k combined rating is either with a SRW ton truck or a ~20 year old dually truck that keeps the GVWR under 12k.

The modern stuff is north of 14k for ton trucks now.

OK, I see your point on GVWR
