An acquaintance seen my 24" & 36" pipe wrenches laying on the bench this summer and asked what I used them for. I said there is always something around here that needs bent a little or straightened out.

He had no idea what I was talking about.

My first post regarding this thread . I just hope Kando wears correct gloves , eye protection , has proper lighting.... !

And a cup :silly:

Of course.... a pipe wrench should ONLY be used for pipe?
Silly me...for thinking there might be other applications.

That's OK Mate, I understand that "when the only thing you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail."

Why so much angst against using a pipe wrench?

It is a PIPE fitting.

Pipe wrenches are MADE to grip on something round.

The harder you pull, the harder they bite. The QUALITY part comes down to the jaws. Junk one's round jaws off.

This ISNT about having a hammer and everything looking like a nail. A pipe wrench IS a correct tool for this job

But he already tried a pipe wrench and it didn't work. :(

I don't think he tried it with the gusto we now require of him. Using the right pipe wrench with confidence and force, that plug would have popped right out. I suspect it was a light duty wrench and a fleeting effort.

Kando sounds like he's now on right track and I'll bet that plug's days are numbered.

I certainly hope so... we still need 165 more posts before it hits 1000.

With all due respect, a square plug is not round. And while this may have had the corners rounded off it still doesn't fit that description. However, if going that route bigger isn't always better. Also, LouNY made a very good suggestion about 150 posts ago.
