Where is Your Tractor Kept?

/ Where is Your Tractor Kept? #51
I can see where there is a FORTUNE waiting to be made. Develop a rodent repellent that actually works. My Jeep, F-150, riding mower & tractor all are in stalls in a large carport. Out of the weather and sun - but not the rodents.

My yard looks like a war zone - pocket gophers. I've just found info about how to control this and will be applying same - this fall.

When we first moved down here from AK - my son took great pleasure in eliminating ALL the ground hogs - they have never come back.

Over the 36+ years out here the mice have only bothered the wiring on one vehicle, once. Otherwise - dog/cat food in the air cleaner canister, nests in the engine compartment, nests in out-of-the-way cavities in various vehicles.

However - currently I have had two big old wood rats ( AKA - pack rats) build massive nests in the engine compartment of my Jeep. No chewing on anything. Well, last night I finally shot/killed the female. Male trapped four days ago. These two are the only two I've had in the 36+ years out here. Hopefully - another 36+ years before I see any more.

I'm surprised at the difference between the little field mice and the big 'ol pack rats. The mice - quick, clever, everywhere(except in the house), easy to trap. The rats - big, slow, stupid, easy to whack with a shillelagh - obviously, few and far between.

The nice thing to know about "out in the country", around here - - its going to be a CONSTANT battle with the pocket gophers and mice. There is a never ending supply.

I have mice (who nest under the fuse bay in the MF2660) and ground hogs that burrow under the doors and make underground homes under the bush hog, etc. It is endless. A good concrete floor would defeat the ground hogs but there is no such thing as a mouse-proof building.

You need some snakes. Or a cat.

Rodents. Ugh. Just trapped a rat the size of a house cat in the compost bin. _So far_ they haven't messed with the Kubotas. They have torn up the firewall insulation in two trucks - and once the little green tractor sneezed mouse parts in my face when I opened the hood and fired it up. Double ugh.

Back to a happier topic: I posted the tractor port up-thread, but here's a little different view. The barn has a room for a 2300 gallon water tank + associated pump and controls, a guest apartment, a single car garage bay, and a big bay for the SeaSport. Those planks cover a 15" deep well that drains outside the building. I can work on the engines - and run them on ear-muffs - without hauling the boat outside.

Cinch Gopher Trap

But about 3 of these and a small digging tool (spade). I ride my property of all gophers as did another guy that I suggested this trap to that had about 20 gophers.

Just stake the trap down to the ground, otherwise another varmint might drag the entire trap with dead gopher into the woods (ask me how I know.)

In a 40x40 metal building which I thought would be aplenty 3 yrs ago when it was built. Now I wish it would have been 100x60 which is why i'm tossing up adding on or building another 40x40 on other side of property.

Those look good.

This is what I've used for 40 years. Works well. Basically the same way, scoop out a clearing at the run, set the trap, slide it in leaving the opening and be sure to have the trap anchored down with a small chain staked in the ground. I try to push them into the run a little ways.

Google Express

I always catch the gopher but keeping up with them is a PITA.

I keep everything is the shop. The sun kills paint and interior. When you build a shop and someone tells you to build it bigger, do it. I致e outgrown mine.

Brett

your shop looks great!!

I keep mine in my pole barn, but im sure previous owners kept it outdoors due to its faded paint.
