Yeah, I do remember their being a GR40 and a GR20. The one I have is a GR40. Perhaps the frostbite is a GR20? I'm not sure. But I do really like this grapple for logs and brush

That makes more sense. I remember thinking, "it looks like a toy for a subcompact" when looking at the Frostbite. :confused3:

I like really your grapple xc !! I am wondering why the extension teeth are a must. What kind of troubles did you have w/o them ?? Thanks.

Another toy for Luke. That will be good for moving some of those big rocks around with too.

We'll, they are a must for me anyway. I really like the little bit of extra reach. they also slightly angle up which makes it that much easier to lift up larger logs with support from the bottom, and makes it feel that much more like a 3rd hand. It's also a good sacrificial tip when they wear out. Like the blade on a front end loader. I believe the teeth were $150 for the set. But its still a great grapple without them. And for me to say it's "a must" is really just an opinion based off what I do with the grapple myself. And I doubt you'd wear the bare grapple out very fast. Unless you are moving A LOT of large rocks

I intend on building a mean one not for a subcompact but for a full size backhoe. And it'll have a heck of a bite force. The idea for the design was to save cost. Here's one I saw at the NFMS, but I like the more C shaped one better.

Thanks xc - I was trying to get a read from you on what those teeth added. I have very little experience with mine so I am naturally open to improving features. I was wondering if the teeth were meant to be used when the rock plate was mounted to give you some teeth/tines to work with. How much extension do they give you. It is hard to tell from the pic ??


This is what the Frost Bite looks like. Probably bigger than you remember Luke. Certainly very similar to the Sundown units. The Frost Bite is a little beefier than the Igland in places, like the cylinder back-up plate and the QA plate. Also, I think the frost Bite lid joints are bushed better. Pretty similar though. Mine cost $1495 including SSQA plates and he "threw in" the rock plate which I did not mount.

The Frost Bite comes as a grapple unit with a left and right bolt-on mounting plate. There are 3 different plates available; SSQA, John Deere, and Euro/ISO. It weighs 359 lbs including the SSQA plate. The opening is 42" and the bottom tines are spaced at 29". It is a pass-by grapple. It has two male 1/2" ISO-B hydraulic QD crimp-on hose end connectors on the 3/8" hoses. The quality is very good.

I just put mine together and got the hydraulic QD's matched up ( changed the tractor from M/F 3/8 ISO-A to F/F 1/2" ISO-B) yesterday morning and used it during the afternoon so I don't have much experience yet but so far I like it quite a bit.

I think the teeth add about 6 inches. (I'm guessing as I'm not with the tractor today) I can't really use them and the rock plate together as they use the same mounting holes. I could, but I don't think it would be a good setup. The teeth, I think, are good for timber/very large rocks without rock plate/and finger tip picking up. Medium sized rock picking would have no use for the teeth. I only have a dozen or so rocks to move, most of my work is timber/brush/firewood/scrap metal related

Yup, same dimensions. I must have cortical rust setting in...
Mine is an auction find. No plate or model on it. Just the Igland sticker. Not sure how it compares to the current model but probably very similar. Every bushing is greasable....

I have never seen an Igland Unit but have heard they are very good. I was making my comparison with units branded SunDown which I have seen. But the differences were not earth shattering.

On my sundown unit, the little stainless nameplate says sundown GR40 but also says Igland with the Igland logo along with their address in Norway. Though it's made in Lithuania.

That little rip saw one looks interesting, but I could not find model/pricing on a quick search.
