Yes its my dozer. Only about a shot glass of oil came out of the dry clutch housing. So i dont think its a major leak. IMAG0005.jpgIMAG0006.jpg

Looking to see what oil goes into the housing in front of the gear box. The dipstick has no reading. Looks like a hydraulic reservoir. Thanks20150517_101342.jpg

If you have a F-N-R direction control valve on your left saddlebag then that "reservoir" is your shuttle clutch. It consists of two compact planetary drives, two clutch packs (a forward and reverse), and two hydraulic servos that actuate the clutch packs. These are geared friction drives and require an oil with an AGMA rating of 5. The best oil for this application is ISO AW 220 Machine Oil, second best is Caterpillar T0-4 Torque Fluid, and third best is AW ISO 46 hydraulic oil. Your choice of brands if they meet spec. Do not use ATF, UTF, or engine or gear oils. There are two hydraulic pumps mounted on the right front corner of the engine. The most forward one is for the shuttle clutch.

Thanks bob yes it has f-n-r control valve on left. I found out why the dozer was really lazy steering left. The left steering clutches and break band are soaked with oil. The seals dont look bad visibly. There's no chunks missing on the seals. Im going to replace them and hope that was the problem for oil entering the dry clutches. Is there a place to order new plates and clutches. Heres some pics. Big job.20150517_194006.jpg20150517_194010.jpg20150517_194819.jpg20150517_194827.jpg20150517_205654.jpg20150517_205659.jpg20150517_192033.jpg

Wow! You didn't have to take it down that far just for steering clutches and brake bands. Yes, all the friction material has become saturated for sure. Not worth the time to try and clean it, because you can't. The new clutch discs you get will probably be a bonded sintered bronze composite which can be cleaned. Also check the clutch plates for wear and warpage, these can be reused if they qualify. Circle-G Tractors, Keno Tractor, and Northern Tool are just a few of the dealers that stock parts.

Ya i found out you justn had to pull the blade forward. Its ok i want to paint the whole machine anyway. The metal plates are pitted so i will be replacing them. Do you know if there are clutch discs for the forward and reverse. If there is i will replace those to since its this far down. Thanks again

Ok bad news this dozer was made by guilin and the parts are different than the nortrac. So no parts available. I will replace seals and clean up all the clutch parts and brake band and hope for the best. Thanks

Guilin was acquired by Yuchai in the mid '90's, and not much has changed in the running gear and undercarriage since then. The Northern Tool Nortrac dozer is a re-branded Yuchai with a few bells and whistles added. If you get the measurements and dimensions on the new parts from Northern Tool or any other dealer, you will find them to be the same.

I called northern tool they said they are different . They look very similar on the outside. Mine has 5 fiber disks he said nortrac is 7 fiber disk. I also called the other 2 tractor supplies and they said the same. That mine is different. I asked for specs on the disks but they only know p/n's. I cleaned up my discs they are nice and dry now and plenty of meat left. Im still baffled how the oil got it there. The seals are still mint. Im going to replace them anyway. I was confused on the clutch stack. They are fiber, metal, fiber etc till the last one being metal against the metal cover. Shouldn't that be fiber against the metal cover. To me metal to metal wont have a good grip. Anyone have a diagram of the clutch discs. Thanks

Well, I will acquiesce for the sake of brevity.
Metal against metal without lubrication is wrong. Here is the Yuchai steering clutch. The early steering clutches had riveted friction media, the later have the bonded sintered bronze composite which are considerably thinner, hence seven instead of five. #15 is just a spacer/washer. You have to remember that many parts sales people have never even seen the parts they are selling.
